I pulled up the vacant chair, sat, and slid my hand into Milo’s.

“I know you’re scared, Milo, and hurting a bit. I am going to help you, but you have to believe in magic. Do you?”

“I…maybe?”

“I’ll take it.” I snorted and chanced a glance at Easton, who was watching us both intently.

“If you’re giving him a sedative, I’d rather you not,” Easton said, and I wanted to comfort him just as much as his little boy.

“No, silly dad. Did you not hear, I said magic?” I rolled my eyes, earning a giggle from Milo.

“My bad.” Easton held his hands up and it was as if the small laughter from his son relieved the pressure from his chest. Magic worked in many ways; sometimes it was simply a child’s happiness lighting up a dark room.

“Okay, Milo.” I placed my hand over the IV…This was all for show; I could remove the pain and the fear it caused from the doorway, but the dramatics were for Milo.

“If this doesn’t work, what then?” Milo questioned.

“If it doesn’t work, I’ll make you a batch of cookies.” I smirked, and that appeased Milo.

“I want you to close your eyes, Milo, and whisper the words ‘hurt me not,’ count to three, and open your eyes.”

Milo closed his eyes and the second he did, I released my gift. Through my fae eyes I saw the glow of my magic flowing through his body, the shimmer of the aura I was creating around him. Easton and Milo couldn’t see it, but I knew he’d be feeling a lot better in a moment.

“Hurt me not,” Milo whispered, and his eyes fluttered open.

“How are you feeling?”

He looked right at me and beamed. He lifted his arm slightly.

“It doesn’t hurt. Oh, wow. You are magic.”

I chuckled and peeked at Easton, whose eyes were wide. “You’ll be okay, Milo.”

“Oh, no.” He sighed.

He shouldn’t be hurting, so I couldn’t understand his sad face.

“What’s wrong?”

“It worked, so now I won’t get my cookies.”

And this was my way in. “Actually, what if I said I’d still make them, but there’s a catch?” I spared Easton a glance but returned my attention to Milo. “The doctors want you to stay here for a bit, so they can figure out what’s going on in your body. But that’s a good thing, because I’m here all night so I’ll stay with you, and afterward I’ll bake cookies and bring them here tomorrow.”

Milo met his father’s eyes. “Daddy, will you stay with me?”

“I…how does this work?”

“Dad can stay with you if you want, but remember you’ll also have me. So if Dad can’t or has to go home, you will not be alone, I promise.”

“Are they gonna hurt me again?”

I shook my head. “Not on my watch!”

He relaxed against the pillows. He was feeling no pain and quite relaxed, which made this easier.

“Okay, Finch, I’ll stay.”

One glance at Easton and I knew he was in as much awe of me as most humans were when they saw what my gift could do. They just didn’t know exactly what I was doing.
