I walked them out and to Easton’s truck and even though I knew I was going to see them again soon, every step closer to the truck made me sadder.

“Bye, Finch. See you soon—you promised.”

“I sure did.” I helped Milo into the truck while Easton tossed the bag into the bed.

I shut the door and turned, and Easton was right there. I peered up and was met with green eyes filled with emotions I was afraid to put words to.

“You’ll text, right?”

“I promised, Easton, and believe me when I tell you I do not…cannot break a promise.”

He cocked his head. “You’re pleasantly unusual.”

“As long as it’s pleasant.”

This close the heat coming off him, and the scent of pine was waking up parts of my body I didn’t need the public to see, so I slid to the right and away from the truck.

“Have a good night, Finch.”

I couldn’t have moved if I’d wanted to. I stood there, waving to Milo until the truck and the piece of my heart was out of sight.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Easton

Over the next few days, Milo was able to catch up on some homework and we arranged homebound learning until the doctor gave him the all-clear to go back to school.

We returned to the hospital for Milo to get a blood draw, and while his numbers had dropped in the time after the infusion, he wasn’t exhibiting any issues, so we went home with no answers still and basically a wait-and-find-out experience.

Today was different. Finch was going to be coming over at around four. Milo wanted us to make him tacos and watch a movie. It was all he’d talked about since Finch and I had discussed a day that would work.

“Do you even know if he likes tacos?” Tru asked as the three of us unpacked groceries.

“Who doesn’t like tacos?” Milo scoffed.

“Monsters,” I answered, and we high-fived.

“Dorks…okay, so what movie are you subjecting the poor man to?” She quirked a brow and crossed her arms over her chest.

“What goes well with tacos?” Milo cocked his head, and I shrugged.

“Action movie?”

“Sweet Lord.” Tru pinched the bridge of her nose. “He’s gonna run far and fast.”

“Finch is too cool not to love tacos and action movies.” Milo was convinced and seeing him so happy, there was no way I was going to argue the fact that maybe Tru was right.

“Oh, the cookies. We have to get the cookies made.” Milo made a mad dash for the pantry but was moving so fast he slid and before Tru or myself could get to him, he fell hard on his ass.

“Milo!” Tru shouted at the same time I rushed over to him.

“Don’t move.” I proceeded to look him over while he grumbled that he was fine.

“I just hurt my butt bone. I’m okay.”

“I need to look. The doctor stated that we needed to look for any unexplainable bruising but to also check if you hurt yourself for bleeding under the skin. And, Milo, you had your biopsy near there; please let me see.”

He sighed at the same time the doorbell rang.
