“You are?” A fluttering in my stomach tickled a smile right to my face.

“Yeah, because I’d miss you all as well, and knowing I can see you before you go makes me happy.”

It didn’t have to be the last day—that was the whole point of what I was saying, but I’d already made myself look like a creeper.

“Thank you, Finch.”

“I’ll be there as fast I can. Now go tell your boy he’s going home.”

As soon as the call disconnected and I slid the phone into my pocket, relief flowed through my entire body, and it all had to do with a blue-haired nurse who cared with his entire heart and had the power to make pain disappear and worries turn into a breeze.

I still had to call Tru, but I decided I’d wait until I spoke with Milo and could get an exact time he’d be discharged.

Now it was time to tell Milo he could leave.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Finch

I tried to tamp down my happiness and excitement—not because I didn’t want to appear like a goof in front of Easton or his kids, but because it seemed like my every emotion was like a chord on a guitar being plucked and the vibration was pulsating right to the fae realm.

Living among humans for all these years, I had felt happiness, contentment, so many emotions, and never once had I seen my family or received a threat.

As I grabbed my keys to leave, I was struck with the seriousness of the situation and what my staying involved with the Koopers might mean. My mother had sent her elite protector to watch over me, things in the fae realm were bad, and a tendril of fear crept up my spine at that thought.

This had to be good-bye. I hadn’t finished the blanket, but I could ship it over to their house. I nodded in full agreement with my internal self as I locked up.

The entire drive to the hospital, there was a ping-pong game of “Is this the right thing?” playing in my head.

Before I’d left Daisy, I asked her to get any and all information about what my father was up to. She’d promised to try but explained her job was to protect and not to inform.

Why was my father suddenly interested in me to the point where a moment of pure happiness in my life forced him to threaten me?

Parking and getting to Milo’s room was like muscle memory for me, and I’d zoned out the entire way. Only thing I remembered was to slip my mask on just as the elevator opened to the floor.

I knocked quickly and opened the door.

“Finch.” Milo called for me so happily, my heart skipped a beat.

“Hey!”

I glanced over at Easton, who was running his fingers through his hair and pretty much looking everywhere but at me. A flustered Easton might be my new favorite thing.

“I’m going home!” Milo lifted his arms, and his sheer happiness was contagious.

“That is the coolest!” I moved closer to the bed.

“I gotta come here every couple of days, but I don’t have to stay here.”

I chuckled and sat on the corner of his bed. “Then I’m so glad I got to say good-bye.”

Milo’s smile dipped. “Good-bye?”

“Yeah, but it’s the best kind of good-bye, because it means you’re well enough to leave the hospital.”

He furrowed his brow and frowned. “Just ’cause I leave here doesn’t mean we have to say good-bye, does it? I mean we’re friends, aren’t we?”

There’s that dang heart pang again. “Oh, Milo, I’d be honored to be your friend.”
