I slipped into the room and did a little spin. “I shall be with you tomorrow, my prince.”

My heart flipped when all three Koopers cheered. I’d been walking among humans for years now and never, not once, had any of them filled my heart with more joy than these three right here.

CHAPTER NINE

Easton

A little before seven, two nurses walked in. Daisy was done for the day, and I wasn’t sure who these two were. One walked over to the board and wrote his name: Dawson. I spun my head quickly toward Finch.

“Aren’t you working tonight with Milo?”

He bit his lip and an adorable blush painted his cheeks. Adorable? When had I ever noticed a man like that?

“Okay, so technically, no. I’m off tonight and tomorrow.” I opened my mouth to ask him why he was here, but he barreled on. “I made a promise to Milo that he wouldn’t hurt on my watch, so here I am and unless you kick me out, I’m staying.”

Dawson chuckled. “You’re also on file as the night nurse for Milo, which means Dr. Perry wants you paid for this. Honestly, we got four new patients in the last couple of hours, so I won’t say no to the help.”

“Masks up when you walk out of this room, then, guys.” Finch pointed to each of us. “I can get in scrubs and take care of Milo.”

“You only have to get into scrubs if you want.” Dawson shrugged and moved over to Milo’s IV.

“What’s that?” Milo pointed to a bag with cloudy yellow goop in it.

“These are platelets.” Dawson held up a glass bottle with what looked like water in it. “This is the immunoglobulin.”

“The orange stuff looks like goop.” Milo’s lip curled.

“It does, but you’ll be getting both of these. Two bottles of the immunoglobulin and one bag of platelets, but first.” Dawson placed a tiny plastic cup down with two pink pills in them. “The antihistamine.”

Finch was fast and he already had a glass of water poured. “This will be what makes you tired.” He winked and Milo took the water. He eyed the pills.

“They won’t bite.” Finch handed them to him. “Open your gob.”

Milo laughed, and with an ease I was coming to realize Finch had, he took them.

“How you doing, Buddy?” I moved closer and squeezed his hand, Tru had moved to the small couch and was watching everything the nurses did.

“I’m okay. Nothing hurts so that’s good, I guess.”

“This will take a few hours,” Dawson said as he stepped back from the IV. “Afterward, Milo will likely sleep.”

“What if he has a bad reaction?” Tru stood, and Finch moved out of the way so she could be closer to her brother.

“We’ll know within forty-five minutes if he has a reaction.”

“Then we’ll stay.” Tru plopped onto the bed and gently slid her hand into Milo’s.

Dawson looked over at me. “You’re welcome to stay, Mr. Kooper, but due to the influx of patients to this ward, I’m afraid your daughter will need to leave.”

“What?” Tru snapped.

I placed a hand on her shoulder. “Can she at least stay the first forty-five minutes?”

He peered behind me to where Finch was reading a magazine without a care in the world. He must’ve sensed us all staring at him.

“What? I’m not the lead nurse; I’m here to serve Master Kooper.” The corner of his mouth kicked up. “Which I will be…until the wee hours of the morning.” He tossed the magazine onto the couch. “Tru, I promise if anything happens overnight, you will know about it.” He drew an X on his chest.

“Can I stay the forty-five minutes at least?”
