“Finch will be here soon, right?” Milo asked with a goofy smile and a waggle of his brows. “Cookieeeeees.”

“You’re a nut.” Tru playfully pushed Milo’s leg.

“Before Finch gets here, I wanted to talk to you about something.” I did my best to breathe and keep a neutral face.

“Is this about what the doctors said?” Tru moved from the chair to Milo’s bed and gripped his hand.

“Yeah, but it isn’t bad. Just listen.”

Here goes nothing.

CHAPTER EIGHT

Finch

After Arachnis left, I was shaking. Angry because even the slightest happiness in my heart sent waves through the fae realm and gave my father cause to poke at my life here.

I understood the rules. How could any fae forget?

Fae were forbidden from falling in love with humans. We could have sex, but love was out of the question. Fae were forbidden from showing humans their true form…one rule Arachnis had needed to be warned about many times. If at any time a fae broke these rules, the human’s mind would be erased of their times together and anything they’d seen or done…and the fae would face punishment. Whatever that punishment was, the courts decided.

I was not in love, but I could see how the joy in my heart while I was with Milo could emulate the levels of love one would have when their heart was owned.

Within the next two hours, I’d baked three different types of cookies. I was a little tired and desperately wanted to bathe before I could return to the hospital, so I washed up first.

Fae didn’t require as much sleep as humans. I could rest for an hour or two and be ready to go. And that was what I did. Showered, I chose to rest in my recliner that I absolutely loved, and the moment my phone chimed that it was three o’clock, I got ready to go.

It took half an hour to box up the cookies; then my neighbor stopped me to ask if I would be interested in donating baked goods to the upcoming charity bake sale, having spotted my sugary hoard.

I didn’t end up getting to the hospital until five.

“What are you doing here?” Sam quirked a brow as I walked past her station.

“The boy, Milo. I promised him cookies, and I can’t break a promise.”

“You’re so sweet, Finch. I’m off in thirty, so have a good one.”

I waved and hit the button for the elevator. Hopefully, the day had been uneventful and the Koopers were in a good mood.

I used my pass to get into the ward, slipped the mask on, and Daisy waved when she saw me. There was something so pleasant about her—I couldn’t place it, but I liked her.

“I have arrived as promised.”

I lifted the two boxes of cookies I was balancing in one hand. “Cookie contracts mustn’t be broken.”

“Of course.”

“How was the day?”

She squinted, and while I couldn’t see her whole face, I imagined it was scrunched. “IVIG and bone marrow biopsy were scheduled.”

“Damn…but it’s to be expected with the results not really giving them more answers than they were hoping. Okay, thanks for the heads-up.”

I secured my tote bag and walked to Milo’s room. I only knocked once before the door swung open and a slightly frazzled Easton was in front of me.

“Hello.” I slipped free of my mask and smiled, knowing he was likely falling apart with all the stuff the doctors had thrown at him today and then having to tell Milo.

“Finch.” His shoulders dropped and my heart warmed, knowing my arrival had alleviated some stress.
