Page 93 of Overwhelmed By Love

“I’m leaving. This is ridiculous. You left me here alone for hours. You didn’t even have the decency to answer my texts or phone call.”

“Doll, my phone is dead. I think I got some water in it when I answered Kenji’s call. Secondly, I called you on my office phone, and you didn’t answer.”

I take my phone out of my pocket and see that I left it on mute. He did call me twice, and I didn’t hear it.

“That doesn’t matter. How is it going to work when we have plans, or we’re getting married, or I’m in labor? Is our personal life going to take a back seat to your company? I don’t want to sound selfish, but today wasn’t fair.”

“By then, I’ll have staff trained to handle these crises. This needed my attention. You’re not leaving me. We spent enough time apart last week, and I refuse to do it again over something so silly.”

“You can’t stop me, Jordan. You don’t own me. I’m just some girl that you claim to love.”

“I do love you. What do I have to do to prove it?”

“Be with me,” I say quietly.

“I thought that is what I was doing.”

“Not when your business takes precedence over us. I think we started to fast. This is all happening too fast.”

“Emma, you’re just scared.”

“You’re right. I’m terrified that I’m going to fall too deeply and then get dumped. My heart can’t take that again.”

“That won’t happen. I promise.”

“Jordan, I need to go.”

He bows his head and holds the elevator door for me.

“Go to the garage. I’ll have Albert take you home.”

“No. I’ll take the subway. I prefer it,” the last thing I need is Albert talking to me about the wonders that make up Jordan. I need to be left alone and get over my anger and fear on my own.

“I wish you’d reconsider.”

“I’ve made up my mind. I’ll talk to you soon.”

Jordan lets the doors close, and I press the button for the lobby. On the way down, I feel the crippling weight of being apart from Jordan. What am I doing? I’m making a mistake again. I slump against the railing and wait until the elevator gets to the lobby, then punch in the code to the penthouse.

The car ascends quickly, and when the doors open, I find Jordan sitting at the kitchen island drinking whiskey from the bottle and banging his fist on the granite. He doesn’t hear me approach and whips around when I touch his shoulder.

“You came back.”

“I don’t want to make another mistake.”

“I’m sorry I left you. Please give me time. I’m not used to this.”

He rakes his hand through his thick blonde hair and takes another swig from the whiskey bottle.

“I’m here; you don’t need that.”

Jordan grabs me into his arms, squeezing me tightly against him, “I need you, Emma. I can’t keep losing you. Move-in with me.”

“No, that’s just crazy. Don’t you see how crazy that is? We barely know each other.”

“I want you here with me all the time.”

“And I want to be with you all the time, but we don’t know each other. I’m sure I have habits you’re going to hate.”
