Page 105 of Overwhelmed By Love

“I wish this was more private. I’d bring a blanket out here tonight and make love to you in the moonlight.”

“We can still come out tonight and sit on the beach, can’t we?”

“Sure, if you want that we can do it.”

We walk the long expanse of shoreline, and on our way back, a man with blond hair holding the hand of a petite redhead waves to us as they enter the beach. Jordan drops my hand and runs towards them. I hurry along to keep up with him. When Jordan reaches him, they hug each other tightly, and he plants a kiss on the redhead’s cheek.

“Sam and Gwen, this is Emma Stanford, my girlfriend.”

Sam raises his eyebrows but offers me his hand. Then I shake Gwen’s hand. I like them right off the bat. They are personable and friendly. Gwen has the lightest blue eyes I’ve ever seen, almost like ice. Sam has a resemblance to Jordan with his chiseled jaw. Their heights are nearly the same, except Jordan is a tad taller.

We sit on the patio with Monica talking until it gets dark, and Sam starts to yawn.

“Tired brother?”

“Yeah. Some of us have bosses to answer to. I worked part of the day.”

“It doesn’t have to be that way. You know that.”

“I do, but it’s something we can discuss at another time.”

He and Gwen rise and hug us goodnight. Monica decides it’s time for bed and tells us not to stay up too late. After they leave and we’re alone on the patio, I ask.

“I thought you were a latch key kid. You had Sam.”

“Sam is ten years older than me even though he doesn’t look at it. He left for college two weeks after my father died. He was going to stay home, but my mother didn’t want his full ride to UCLA to be disrupted. So I only saw him on holidays, and sometimes he couldn’t make it home. After college, he got a job in San Francisco.”

“So, he didn’t live with Nicky?”

“Not really. He did come home when he could get off work. I’ve offered him a job several times, but he’s declined. He has a degree in structural engineering. I could use him in my real estate development division.”

“Nicky warned me to keep company business in the office.”

“What was that all about?”

“I told him I wouldn’t mention to his fiancée that he fucked an intern.”

“Emma, don’t create drama.”

“I’m not. I had no intention of saying anything. If he wants to cheat on his fiancée, it’s none of my concern.”

“Good, keep it that way.”

I was annoyed that Jordan would think I would cause problems for Nicky at his mother’s home. I didn’t want to get involved. I excused myself to go upstairs.

“Em, what’s the matter.”

“Nothing. I’m tired.”

“I have to lock up. I’ll see you upstairs.”

By the time he came up, I was already under the sheets. I turned my back to him when he walked through the door. He silently undressed, and I heard him in the bathroom before I felt the bed dip with his weight. He reached out for me, and I pulled away.

“Emma, you are upset with me. Why, because I told you not to start drama?”

“I just want to go to sleep.”

“I don’t want you to go to sleep angry. Talk to me.”
