He pulls away from me and yanks the car door open to grab something from the dashboard. It’s a jewelry box, and I stare at it curiously. I gasp when he flips the box, and there’s a beautiful luxurious ring sitting inside. He pulls out the ring. “Give me your left hand.”

Without hesitation, I obey. Alec slips the ring down my finger, and it’s a perfect fit. I hold it up, my eyes widening at how it glistens and reflects light. I don’t need anyone to tell me this is worth a fortune.

“It’s a promise ring,” Alec says. “And I keep all my promises.”

“Oh yeah?” I smile and lean into his arms again. “Remind me of your promises again.”

“First, I’ll never stop loving you,” he says, sinking his fingers into my hair and angling my head as he kisses me softly. “Second, that I’ll forever choose you.”

“Okay.”

“Third, my loyalty and commitment are yours. You own me, Jasmine, and no matter how far away I am, I’ll always return to you.”

Tears sting my eyes. “Do you promise you’ll return on Sunday? I cannot deal with you being away for so long.”

“Do you think I can?” He scoffs. “I’ll be back on Sunday. Okay?”

“Okay. I love you, Alec. So much.”

He kisses my forehead and hugs me tightly. “I love you, too, Jasmine.”

We stay this way for a long time until moments pass, and it feels like we’re turning into statues. We finally pull away from each other, and Alec takes my left hand and kisses it. “Don’t take your ring off,” he says.

“I won’t.”

“Alright.” He slides his sunshades back in place. “I’ve got to go now.”

“Alright. Goodbye. See you soon.”

Five minutes later. I’m waving him off as he drives away. I walk back into the house and stand at the door. “Ana?”

“Yes?” She sits up. “What are you standing over there for? Come in and tell me everything that happened.”

“Later.” I wave her off. “For now, let’s go to the hospital. I have to do a pregnancy test.”

Chapter twelve

Alec

“This is such a beautiful place,” Eve chirps, taking off her coat and laying it gently on her lap as she sits. “Thank you for bringing me here, Alec.”

Like I had a choice. “You’re welcome.”

A waitress materializes beside us, her gaze volleying between Eve and me. This is France, and because we are children of the most successful billionaires in the country, we are celebrities. This is why I always miss New York because there, I’m just Alec. No one knew who I was.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Ace. Good afternoon, Miss Sicily,” the waitress greets. “What would you like to eat?”

I pick up the menu, and so does Eve. Without looking too hard, I choose the first meal on the list. It takes another moment before Eve places her order. I admit with some self-loathing that the only reason I’m irritated at the slightest thing Eve does is because I do not like her. I cannot imagine being irritated that Jasmine is taking too long to place her order at a restaurant. I’ll wait forever until she finds the perfect meal, and I’ll wait with a smile on my face.

“I want this.” Eve points to something on the menu. “Pair it with this wine.”

“Noted. We will be back with your meal in a few minutes,” the waitress says and hurries away.

Eve leans forward. “Did you see how she was staring at you?” She asks with disdain.

My eyes narrowed. “I don’t think she was.”

“She was!” Eve insists. “I saw her.”
