One hour later, I’m parked in front of Riley’s apartment, waiting for Jasmine to come outside. When she does, my breath catches in my throat as I watch her approach the car. She’s wearing a beautiful blue dress that makes her look like a fairy. It’s one of the dresses I bought the other day, and seeing the fit on her, I decide we are going on another shopping spree before the planned date.

“Hey.” Jasmine smiles when she enters the car.

“Come here.” I lean forward to hug her, inhaling her scent and letting it intoxicate me momentarily. “You look beautiful. I love the dress.”

“Thank you,” she smiles. “You bought it.”

“I’m just getting started.” I look toward the house. “Riley isn’t home, right? That’s why you agreed for me to pick you up at the house.”

Jasmine sighs heavily and reaches for my hand. “Alec, I just don’t think it’s time to tell him yet.”

“Give me one good reason, and I’ll let it go.”

Jasmine stays silent, unable to justify her reason for hiding our relationship from Riley. Riley and I have never discussed Jasmine, but I figure he won’t be too thrilled to hear I’m dating his sister, but I plan to assure him and give him my word. If there’s one thing Riley knows about me, it’s that I always keep my word. If there’s one thing I will do, it’s what I say I’ll do.

I pull the car out of the driveway, and from the corner of my eyes, I see Jasmine suck her bottom lip into her mouth anxiously. “Alec? Are you upset?”

I purse my lips. I mean, yes, I want to be upset, but when she asks in such a cute way, how can I remain upset? It’s unfair to love someone this much; it throws you off balance.

“I promise I’ll let you know when the time is right,” Jasmine says. “Right now, I don’t want anything that’ll mess up our relationship, especially since we’re in the foundation stage. I love you and want everything to work out fine.”

I narrow my eyes and slide her a glance. “You love me.”

She nods. “Yes. But you know that.”

“You’ve never said that to me.”

“I thought you knew,” she said, giggling.

“It’s different to hear you say it.” I’m ashamed to admit that my heart is expanding in my chest, and I fear it will burst. “Say it again, Jasmine.”

“I love you, Alec.” She unsnaps her seatbelt and leans forward to kiss my cheek. “I love you.”

Damn. This girl has me wrapped around her finger, and she doesn’t even know it. “I love you, too, ma beauté.”

Chapter eleven

Jasmine

“You know, I really like him,” Ana says. “At first, I thought he has no personality, but I’ve realized he does. He’s really smart and talented.”

“Hmm.” I narrow my eyes. “Talented in what exactly?”

“Uhm…” Ana scratches her head. “In his work? I guess.”

“What does he do?”

She squints at the wall behind me, trying to remember what her new boyfriend does. It’s Thursday, and I’m hanging out with her after spending all my time in the past week with Alec. I cannot imagine I can ever be in love with him more than I already am, but my heart shucks me each day with how far it’s expanding to accommodate my feelings for Alec.

“I think he’s a cyber security expert,” Ana says, drawing my attention back to her. “Something like that. Or a software developer. I cannot remember which one exactly.”

“You’re dating Boris,” I remind her. “And you cannot remember what he does?”

“Don’t blame me, okay?” She groans. “I just remember that his job sounded very smart, and I was impressed. That’s all that matters. The nitty-gritty isn’t my business.”

“Ana, I will hold your hand when I say this.” I grab her hand, ignoring her dramatic eye roll. “I think you’re only sexually attracted to this guy. Nothing you said is remotely love or like. It’s pure sex.”

Ana laughs. “Jasmine, the sex is good, I agree. Is that so bad?”
