Greer extended his hand, but Alex pulled him into a hug instead. I’m sure his eyes were damp from the thought of saying goodbye to him.

“Don’t worry, Alex,” Jackson said, clapping him on the shoulder. “Greer seems to find a way to keep us old timers around.”

I laughed and kissed him on the cheek. “That’s what he does with family. Keeps them around.”

I couldn’t help but think about Carter. I wasn’t ready to forgive him yet, but knowing Greer, he would be. Thank god no one had commented on the faint bruise on his cheek.

“Ready to go, babe?” Christian asked, wrapping his arm around his husband’s waist. They were the first couple to come out on the team.

“Yeah,” he said.

Alex clapped Greer on the shoulder. “See you in a month, boss. Pre-season workouts will be here before we know it.”

“Enjoy your time off,” he said, glancing over at me. “I know I’m going to.”

CHAPTER 39

GREER

The pre-season rolled around faster than either of us wanted. We went back to the house in Costa Rica and spent three weeks away from everyone and everything. We’d told everyone we were going on our honeymoon and be unreachable. But GQ was the only one who knew the truth. There was no way we could responsibly go away for three weeks without someone having access to us.

We’d spent three weeks back in our favorite place. The rainy season was in full swing, so it just gave us more incentive to stay in bed. Not that we needed it. All it took was one look from Austin, and I was raring to go. Even at fifty-eight, I could keep up with him.

After returning to Portland, I went back to the office. Training camp was coming up, and the rookies needed to meet the boss. We’d missed the draft party, but I left it to the others to handle. I’d been married to my team for way too long, and it was time I gave that attention to the man I loved.

The meeting with my General Manager was almost done when I laid out my plans.

“Charlie, I’m going to put more of this in your hands. In fact, almost all of it. I’m not going to abandon ship, I just need to be here less, and with my husband more.”

He looked at me and smiled. “It’s about fucking time, Greer. You know we’ll be fine. The frivolous lawsuit that dumbass filed was withdrawn. His agent finally got it through to him that if he continued on with it, he had zero hope of signing with another team.”

“That sounds about right,” I said, signing off on the last of the stack of contracts. “I blame the agents for not going over every line. They’re not all like Aidan Hayes.”

I pushed the stack across the table as Melanie buzzed my phone. “Yes, ma’am?”

“Mr. Rowan, Mr. Wentworth is here to see you.”

I smiled. “Send him in please, Melanie. We’re finished.”

“Yes, sir.”

Charlie stood from his chair. “I’ll get my assistant to make a paper trial with these,” he said as my office door opened.

But it wasn’t my husband that walked through my door. It was my best friend. And now I guess my brother-in-law.

“Hello,” Carter said, stepping to the side.

I smiled as Charlie exited, then turned to Carter as the door closed. It was odd to feel so awkward.

“How are you?” I asked. “Come on in.”

He sighed, then sat down in his usual chair. “I’m okay I suppose.”

Nodding, I waited for him to say something. Anything would be fine. But as I started to speak, he cut me off. “Why didn’t you tell me about you and Austin?”

I sat back in my chair and looked at him. “There was nothing to tell until a few weeks ago, Carter. We’d shared a moment in Chicago that night before you arrived, but in the end, neither of us was ready for a relationship.”

“But you were getting married. Does he know all that?” His indignant tone was pissing me off.
