“Good. I offered to sign my retirement papers, but Greer wanted to wait until next spring. And I was fine with that. I just hope he can trade for someone to fill that spot. I’m sure they have their eye on someone from the Combine.”

“You okay with that?”

Patrick shrugged. “I have to be. But I had a good career, and we’re set for life. My investments are solid.”

I gave him a nod. “And I make a little money too, ya know. Just in case you run out.

Patrick smiled and got up. “Speaking of money, I’m going to go work on our vacation.”

“Okay, moneybags. Go crazy.” He laughed, and I went back to my song, as a new grin spread across my face.

When he came back out a little while later carrying his laptop, the smug grin on his face told me he was up to something. “Why do you look like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you have a big secret and you’re going to taunt me with it.”

“Wow, Bradley. Show me the love, why don’t you? I’ve been in the house slaving away, planning the perfect getaway for us, and this is the thanks I get.”

I smirked at him. “Slaving away, huh? Did you break a sweat?”

“Well, no smartass. I was scrolling through page after page, trying to pick out something we’ve never done before.”

“I have an idea. Why don’t you tell me, and I can help?”

“Fat chance, Rockstar.”

I cringed. “Don’t call me that. That’s Adam’s nickname.”

Patrick set the computer on the table, then took my guitar from me. “Technically, you’re the OG Rockstar.”

Reaching down, he held my stare as he held out his hand to me. “Dance with me, babe.”

I wanted to point out there was no music, but did you need it when you were with the person you loved most? My answer was no.

I placed my hand in his, and he tugged me up from the chair. Patrick wrapped me in his arms, and we swayed to imaginary music. The crickets and the sounds of summer serenaded us and reminded me of our childhood.

“This is nice. This is what it would have been like if I could’ve danced with you at the prom.” He placed a kiss on the skin between my shoulder and neck.

“Would there have been music?”

He chuckled. “You and your music. You act like it’s important or something.”

He was teasing me, and I loved it. “Maybe just a little.”

I sighed and thought about dancing to the music of our hearts. If I wrote that song, the guys would have a fit. But maybe it was just meant for us.

“Yeah, babe. This is perfect.”

I laid my head on his broad shoulder and held him close. Moments like this were everything.

CHAPTER 28

PATRICK

Three weeks later, I had Cole in the Range Rover, taking him on the little vacation I’d planned for us. The team had gone to begin formal workouts, and I thought this would be a perfect distraction.

“Where are we going?”
