Cole started laughing at my name for the doc. “That’s not what I meant, and that’s not his name.”

I scoffed. “It should be. Who asks someone in ICU how they’re feeling? What the fuck did he think I was there for?”

The laughter that ripped from Cole made me want to keep it up. I knew the doctor was attractive, but he didn’t hold a candle to my man.

“Patrick,” he groaned. “Can I go in with you? That’s what I’m asking.”

Was he crazy? “Of course you’re going in with me. Who’s gonna remember what he says? Probably not me.”

Cole wrapped me in his arms in our kitchen. I hugged him back. “Your memory is going to fill in all the holes very soon. You’ll see.”

“And if it doesn’t?”

He shrugged. “I’ll tell you everything you’re missing.”

I leaned down and kissed him. “Let’s get this over with.”

Cole sobered at my words and nodded. “Yeah, let’s go.”

As we climbed into my Range Rover, I couldn’t help but wonder why I hadn’t driven my car that night. Cole wouldn’t know, but still, it made me wonder.

Once we were buckled up, he glanced over at me. “Your sunglasses are up there if you want them.”

I did. The light still bothered me just enough to give me a headache.

As we pulled out of the driveway, I reached over and put my hand on his thigh. Touching him grounded me and calmed my nerves. Cole kept both hands on the steering wheel as we pulled up to the gate.

The ride to OHSU was quiet, both of us taking in the nice day outside. When we arrived and found a parking space, my nerves began to get the best of me. As much as I wanted to pretend this appointment didn’t bother me, it did.

“It’s going to be okay,” Cole said, covering my hand with his own.

I nodded. “Yeah, let’s go.”

We got out of the car and made the slow walk to the doors. I wanted to reach out and hold his hand to steady me, but the last thing we needed was for someone to out us prematurely. So I settled for my right hand on his shoulder.

After asking for directions to neurology, we took the elevator to the ninth floor again. My heartbeat picked up as we neared the ICU unit where I’d spent over a week. Cole seemed to know what I needed and kept going. Neither of us really wanted to look at it.

When we reached Dr. Navarro’s office, Simon was sitting outside, flipping through a magazine.

“What are you doing here?” That might not have been as friendly as I might have liked.

“Waiting on you slowpokes to get here.” The glint of humor in his tone made me smile.

“It’s Cole’s fault. He drives like a grandma.”

My boyfriend turned to look at me. “Don’t go there.”

“Seriously, why are you here?”

Simon looked at me. “To be here for your medical evaluation. I do have a responsibility to you and the team. Plus, I want to be here in case he tells you something you don’t like, and you try to convince Greer otherwise.”

“Players would do that?”

“You’d be surprised what someone would do to keep playing. And that shit isn’t happening on my watch.”

My attention was drawn away when the nurse called my name. “Follow me, please. Dr. Navarro has ordered another CT scan. If you’ll have a seat, I’ll get the orderly to take you down.”

Simon started laughing like he knew some joke I didn’t. “What’s so funny?”
