Page 27 of Surprise Bratva Daddy
I’ve made my fair share of mistakes in this lifetime, but the worst thing I’ve ever done is fall in love with a Bratva boss. Not only that, but I’ve let him finish inside me twice now, and we’ve only known each other for two days.
My life is officially off the rails.
The only thing that gives me any kind of reassurance is the fact that, despite the attempts made on my life, I’m still alive. Zane has managed to keep me safe, and I have no reason to believe that he won’t continue to do so.
He hasn't said much about the fire since we got back to his house, but I can see that it's bothering him. He's moody in a way that he wasn't before, and even after we made up, he continues to pace around the house with a cigar clenched between his pearly white teeth and a scowl on his handsome face.
It bothers me more than I'm willing to admit to him. I feel like if anyone is suffering, it should be me. What has gotten him so worked up about the house fire? Surely, he can't be taking Maksim's actions this personally. He wasn't like this before, even when the flash drive was destroyed.
I'm starting to feel a little bit guilty for not telling him what's there, but our relationship is still developing. It would be like telling someone you're on a first date with how much money you have in your bank account. I'd prefer to keep my hand to myself until all the cards have been dealt, which basically requires Maksim to be dead or in prison again.
Zane walks into the living room where I'm curled up on the couch with a blanket. I'm reading a book that's not mine, and it's a nice distraction. It's something normal, like I'm back at my house with my own life. I'm not being chased by a lunatic or manipulated by a dangerous Bratva boss. I'm just a normal person.
"I have some information about Maksim that might interest you," Zane says, sitting down on the couch across from me with his cigar clenched so tightly it's about to break in half.
"What is it?" I ask, putting my book down. I'm not sure how something about Maksim could interest me, but I'm open to listening. The more information I have about what's going on, the better.
"Kiro and a couple of our guys located a business that's recently come under investigation by the police for arms trafficking. Apparently, Maksim's name is attached to the lease, but that's about all that ties him to the place. He's starting over again with the same thing he was doing before, which is beyond stupid, if you ask me."
"Okay, so?"
"So, we're going to break into the building and see what's there. You can stay here while we handle it."
I narrow my eyes. "What good is that going to do? You said yourself that Maksim isn't really tied to the place other than on the lease. I feel like this is just really personal for you, and you're looking for a reason to jump in and get yourself killed over it."
"Wow," he says, pulling his head back. "Where did that come from?"
"From your weird mood," I reply, running my finger across the front cover of my book. "Something isn't right and I can tell."
"What are you, some kind of witch?" he asks like he actually believes that I might be one.
"Just a woman who you continue to underestimate."
"Listen," he says, sighing and taking his cigar from his mouth. "Maksim has already caused me enough misery. He's killed some of my men, ruined countless plans, and almost killed me multiple times. This has always been very personal, and he's escalating things with the fire. That wasn't just about destroying evidence, Monroe. It was about sending a message. He's taunting me."
"And you're falling for it," I reply. "You're letting him get inside your head. It's just a fire, and my house wasn't all that valuable, anyway. After all this is over, you can buy me a new one." I flash him a grin to let him know that I'm joking, but his face remains rigid.
"I'll buy you a thousand houses if that's what you desire, but I'm still going to destroy Maksim. My parents died in a house fire, and Maksim is aware of that, so excuse me if I'm overreacting."
My heart sinks. "Oh, I didn't know. I'm sorry."
"It's fine. Don't worry about it. That was a long time ago, and you're right. It shouldn't bother me anymore. The fact is that it does, and I can't change that. So, I'm going to deal with Maksim and then things will be okay."
I shake my head, feeling helpless. There's no reasoning with him, and even though I want to believe that he'll be okay, I don't think it's going to end well for anyone involved. "Can I go?" I ask.
"Go where?"
"To this place. I'd rather be with you than sitting here worrying," I explain.
He chuckles, shaking his head. "Absolutely not. It's far too dangerous. You can stay here."
"And what if Maksim decides to torch this house, too?" I ask. "I'd rather be with you than sitting around here by myself."
"He's not going to burn down my house. He can't even get in, and he most certainly doesn't know where I live. I make sure to keep those details very private," Zane replies defensively. He puffs out his chest. "Besides, my guards would kill him in an instant if he set foot on this property."
"Why don't you just send Kiro over to the business? He can handle it," I suggest, not wanting to give up this battle yet.
"I’ll make you a deal," he says, rotating his cigar between his fingers and leaning in. "If you give me the information on the flash drive, I'll stay here with you."
