“And so?”

“I sent him your medical files, and he says that he can repair your spine.”

“What?”

“Dr. Hunt is one of the best surgeons in the world. He has been successful on 95% of his spinal surgery cases.”

Daniel stared at her with a blank facial expression. “I was already told that I was to be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life,” he said.

“I know, that is why I have been searching for alternative opinions,” said his grandmother.

“I am not interested in something that will fail.”

“You don’t know that the surgery will fail.”

“I’ve already had three surgeries.”

Fiona rushed to his side. “Are you just going to give up then?” she asked him.

“I have finally accepted that I am bound to this wheelchair forever. The last thing I need is false hope,” he replied. Fiona took his hand into hers. Lady Agaiby raised her eyebrows.

“I understand you,” she said gently. “But don’t you want to try? You have nothing to lose. If the surgery doesn’t work, at least you know you tried but if you don’t get the surgery then you’ll always be wondering.”

Daniel sighed. “It just sounds too good to be true. We had many doctors from different countries tell me that there was no hope of me ever walking again,” he said.

“It only takes one person to be right.” Fiona smiled at him. “I will be with you every step of the way.”

Daniel was silent for a moment. “Okay,” he finally said. Fiona smiled and nodded. Lady Agaiby’s jaw dropped open.

“You are closer than I thought,” she mumbled. “I am glad that you’ve agreed. I will make all necessary arrangements and have you leave as soon as possible.”
