Chapter 16

Emma

Emma was a little bit saddened by the fact that Kiro didn’t come to work. Dania had e-mailed Emma to tell her that she and the sheikh were going to be out of town for a few days for business. Emma had been looking forward to seeing him. She was going to use the excuse of returning his clothes to get an opportunity to speak with him. Sadly he wasn’t at work and so Emma’s plan had to wait a few days.

The week progressed rather slowly for Emma. She went to work and did her job. She just sat at her desk taking calls, replying to e-mails, greeting employees and guests. Work seemed rather dull without Kiro. Not seeing him for that week made her realize that she liked seeing him, even if it was for a few seconds.

On Saturday morning, Emma was sitting at the kitchen table having her cereal when her mother came into the room with a smile on her face.

“Why are you so happy?” Emma asked her mother.

“I got a job,” she replied. Emma dropped her spoon into her bowl.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

Emma jumped up and threw her arms around her mother. She knew how badly her mother wanted a new job. She had been so stressed about it.

“I’m so happy for you,” Emma said to her mother.

“Me too,” she replied. Emma held her mother’s hands in hers. “I will be working as a bookkeeper at a small law firm.”

Emma smiled and nodded. “I’m proud of you,” she said. Her mother rubbed her back.

“Are you going out?” she asked. Emma nodded.

“I’m going to the mall with Madison.”

“Okay. Don’t be home too late.”

Emma nodded as she sat down. She finished her cereal and then went upstairs to get ready. She slipped into a grey playsuit and sandals. She grabbed the car key from her dressing table. She looked at it for a moment. She was actually driving an expensive car that Kiro had bought for her. She felt odd about driving it. She wasn’t used to receiving anything expensive, and so she wasn’t sure how to feel about it.

Emma arrived at the mall where she was meeting Madison fifteen minutes later. She parked her car and then waited for her friend. Madison arrived moments later.

“Check you out,” she said as she got out of her car.

“What?” Emma asked.

“You look nice and the car suits you.”

“I still feel weird about driving this car.”

Madison rolled her eyes. “There is nothing wrong about taking it. You accepting it from him doesn’t make you a gold-digger,” she said. Emma shrugged her shoulders.

“I guess you are right,” she said. “I’m just not used to it. I’ve had to work for everything. Nothing was ever freely given to me.” Emma had always worked hard for everything she had. Whenever her mother wanted to spend money on her, she would refuse. She preferred that her mother spend more on her younger sisters. As the eldest child, Emma felt that it was her duty to look after her sisters and help her mother. She had even worked hard to get a scholarship just so her mother didn’t have to pay her tuition.

Madison linked her arm into Emma’s. “I understand but look at it this way; you didn’t ask for it. Kiro wanted to buy it for you and it’s not a big deal for him.So don’t make a big deal out of it,” she said.

“He hasn’t come to work all week,” Emma said as they started walking.

“You must have been disappointed.”

“What? No, I wasn’t.”

“You know you were looking forward to seeing him after your hot date.”

“It was just a normal date.”
