“Thanks,” Emma said to Dania before she headed to his office. She knocked before she opened the door. Kiro was sitting at his desk. He was writing something.

“Is this a bad time?” Emma asked.

“What do you need?” he asked without looking up from his desk. Emma walked towards his desk and stopped in front of him. She put the velvet box down on the table.

“I came to return this to you,” she said to him. Kiro signed some document and put it in a folder. He closed the folder and then looked up at Emma.

“Are we about to have the same discussion as we did yesterday?” he asked her. His manly voice made her stomach knot up. She wasn’t too close to him but she was close enough to smell him. He smelled lovely. The top two buttons on his burgundy shirt were unbuttoned.

“I just can’t accept it but I accept the thought behind the gesture,” said Emma.

“What thought?”

“I’m saying I understand why you bought the car and I accept the sincerity behind your reason.”

“You are reading too much into the situation.”

Emma raised her eyebrows. He was a stubborn man. Why couldn’t he just say thank you and then keep the car?

“I don’t think I am,” she said. Kiro slowly raised his eyebrows. “I’m grateful, sir, thank you very much,” she added. She didn’t want him to think that she was ungrateful. Emma smiled and rushed out of his office. She sighed with relief as the door shut behind her. He made her nervous.

When Emma was downstairs, she got on with her work. There were some reports to type, and e-mails to send. There weren’t many phone calls. She transferred them to the correct department. Kiro left the office around 7 p.m.

“Are you leaving already?” Emma asked him.

“It’s seven,” he replied.

“It’s just that I normally see you leaving around eight. I guess you’ve been here all day and you are tired.”

Kiro stopped at the gate and looked at Emma. “You talk a lot,” he said to her. Emma smiled.

And you don’t talk enough, said her subconscious. She really wanted to say that to him but he was her boss and she couldn’t speak so freely to him. “I’m just a very friendly and outgoing person,” she said. Kiro just turned on his heel. He scanned his card at the gate and walked off.

He was so unfriendly, Emma thought to herself. She just sat down at her desk and finished off her work. When it was time to leave, she cleared her desk as usual. She took her bag and dashed for the exit. She was in a rush to go home because she was quite hungry, and she needed to complete her assignment that was due for the next day.

“What the heck?” Emma breathed as she found her parking spot empty. She looked around the parking lot and her car wasn’t there. No way, she thought to herself. Had Kiro gotten her car towed?

She saw the Benz still there. There was a white envelope on the windshield pinned down by the wipers. She walked over to the car and took the envelope. Her name was on it. She opened it and found the velvet box.

Emma screamed in frustration. She had thought he was joking when he said that he w0uld have her car towed. She wondered why it was so important to him that she took the Benz. It was probably a pride thing. Seeing as he was unable to say thank you, he bought the car and now that she was refusing it, it was as if she was throwing his gratitude in his face. His ego was probably bruised. Rich men did not make sense to her.

She opened the velvet box and took the car key out. She unlocked the car and got in. Part of her had wanted to just leave the car and take the bus home but then buses to Duncan Valley were not frequent and she was in a rush to get home. She sat in the comfortable beige leather seat and stuck the key in the ignition. The sound of the engine purring gave her goose bumps. It was a little bit exciting. She had never driven such a nice and expensive car before.

Emma arrived home half an hour later. Cynthia saw her from the kitchen and quickly rushed outside. “Where did you get that car?” she cried out as Emma got out of the car.

“It’s a company car,” Emma replied. What else was she to say?

“Wow, really? Your company is quite generous.”

“I work for a sheikh. Naturally everything there is of high standards.”

Cynthia touched the hood of the car. “You have to drive me to school tomorrow,” she said to Emma.

“Let’s go inside,” she said. Cynthia nodded. They headed into the house.

“Mia!” Cynthia called out.

“Why are you hollering like that?” their mother asked as she walked out of the kitchen. Mia rushed down the stairs.
