“You should just go back to America. There is no place for you here,” said their grandmother.

“Nana, that is rude,” Jacob chided. Olivia was not even bothered at this point. Far too many people had said that to her.

“I knew that my actions would haunt me one day,” said their grandmother. She gently touched her face. Olivia saw the almond-shaped birth mark on her grandmother’s wrist, just like the one she had on hers. Sheikh Solomon had told her about it before.

“What did you not like about my mother? The fact that she was from a poor background or because she was American and not Arabic?” Olivia asked. Jacob’s eyes widened. He just leaned back in his seat.

“Do you think I am a racist?” their grandmother asked.

“Possibly,” said Olivia. Jacob’s eyes widened and he just looked at the floor. “If your son was happy with Elizabeth, then why would you tear them apart? Because of you I grew up without a father,” she said.

“It was not my intention for you to grow up fatherless. I was only thinking about my son and my family’s reputation.”

Olivia tried her hardest not to roll her eyes. She was sick and tired of these rich people telling her about reputation. They thought so highly of themselves. Everyone was equal. No one was more important than the other.

“You people only think about yourselves,” said Olivia.

“Did you come here for recognition?” her grandmother asked.

“No, I came here to let you know that I have become reacquainted with my father.” That was the first time she had referred to Sheikh Solomon as her father. “Your plan to keep me away from him failed,” she said as she rose to her feet.

“You are just as fiery as your mother.”

“I am my mother’s daughter. Excuse me.” Olivia walked out of the room and into the corridor. She headed towards the front door and let herself out. Jacob’s driver opened the door for Olivia. She climbed in and sat in the backseat.

Olivia did not even know what to feel. Her so-called grandmother was not even apologetic about her actions. Instead of apologizing or something along those lines, she defended her actions. Once again Olivia found herself wanting to see Joseph. He was the first person that she had thought of talking to about this entire messy situation.

Jacob opened the car door and joined her in the car. “Well, that was awkward,” he said as he shut the door. Olivia laughed a little.

“Maybe we should not have come,” she said.

“No, it’s good we came.”

The driver started the engine and drove off.

“It’s annoying to have to keep going through this conversation again and again,” said Olivia. She was tired of having to talk about being the illegitimate daughter of Sheikh Solomon. She hoped that it was the last time she had to explain herself andhave some nasty remarks thrown in her face.

“I understand you,” Jacob replied. “I feel weird about my mother seducing my father. If she never got pregnant with me, then they would not be together.”

“I can’t imagine how that feels.” It was true. She couldn’t imagine it and she did not want to.

“I never noticed much love between my parents. Now I understand why.”

Olivia placed her hand on his. She felt bad that he grew up in a loveless home. No child deserved that.

Elizabeth was the only woman Sheikh Solomon had ever loved. Olivia felt bad that her presence had brought all those secrets to light.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.

“It’s not your fault.” Jacob sighed. “What happens in the dark will always come to light,” he added. Olivia nodded. She very much agreed with that statement.

Jacob and Olivia arrived back home just after 9 p.m. They both headed into the house and went to their bedrooms. Olivia felt tired and drained. It had been a very eventful day and she just wanted to lie down.

It was about half past nine when the maid came with the house phone and told her that Joseph was on the phone.

“Why are you calling me this late?” she asked Joseph. She was screaming with joy on the inside. She was so happy that he had called her. She had been wanting to speak to him.

“It is very odd having to call you on the house phone all the time,” he said. Olivia laughed a little.
