“Mama, we’re not going to lose Andrew,” I insist.

She nods, reaching out and holding my hand tight. “He’s going to go through this,” she says with more faith.

We fall silent as nurses and doctors go about attending to patients. Then my phone’s ringtone breaks the silence. Bringing it out of my purse, I see it’s Joel, so I excuse myself to go answer it.

“Hello, Kaitlin. How are you doing?” Joel’s voice comes the moment the call connects.

“Hi Joel, I’m good. How are you?”

“Perfect,” he sounds really cheerful, making me wonder what’s going on.

“Where are you? I need you to come over in an hour,” Joel says.

“But I was told I could take today off,” I say, a little apprehensive, wondering if I might have done something wrong.

“Yeah, but duty calls, I have a job for you. I’m sure you’re not opposed to making more money, right?” he asks.

“No,” I quickly respond. I need all the money I can get right now.

“So come over to the Palace, and I’ll give you the details; I’m sure you’ll love it.”

“All right, I’ll be on my way.”

After I end the call with Joel, I head over to tell Mama that I have to go to work and kiss a sleeping Andrew before leaving.

She has no idea where I work, as I told her that Bianca and I now work at the same organization as hostesses. She was a little worried that I’d quit my job as an office assistant, but after I told her this job pays more and will enable us to raise money for Andrew’s treatment, she was at ease. I feel terrible for lying to her, but she would lose her mind if she found out the truth.

Stepping out of the hospital, I hail a taxi to take me to the Palace.

“There you are,” Joel says with excitement the moment I walk into his office. “Please take a seat.”

I sit across his desk, waiting for him to say the reason he called me.

“You have a date tonight,” he says.

“I do?”

“Yes, one of the guests from the birthday party last week came asking for you.”

“Really? Why?”

“He wants you to be his escort to dinner, and he has already paid for you to go shopping for a dress. I told him you were off for the day, but he specifically requested you and no one else. And you know I’m particular about pleasing my customers, especially the first-timers.”

“I don’t understand. How did he see me and then request for me? We wore masks,” I say, my heart now beating fast as I think of the only person who’d seen my face that night.

“Yeah, it was quite hard to figure out who he was talking about until he showed me the mask you’d worn that night. You were the only one who wore a Cleopatra mask that night.”

My heart skips a beat as I immediately realize it’s him; he came looking for me!

Chapter 6

Kaitlin

“He wants you to be his escort to dinner later tonight, and he already paid for you to go shopping for a dress.” Joel’s words keep replaying in my head as I sit in the back of the cab headed to the shop address where I’m supposed to pick up the dress my date already paid for.

That night at the party was unexpectedly the best sex I’ve ever had. The way he worked me with his fingers made me come in ways I never expected. I ran away because I couldn’t understand the way he made me feel. I left my mask in haste, and instead of heading back to join the rest of the party, I begged Joel to allow me to leave early because I was coming down with food poisoning. He allowed me because it was my first night and warned me to be more careful of my diet.

Since that night, I haven’t been able to get that man out of my head. His touch, the feel of his body on mine, is something that is still ingrained deeply in my memory. I thought I’d never see him again, and was already trying to find a way to get him out of my head, until now.
