“I think I just need to take a shower and then get in bed with a glass of wine and watch a movie.”

“That sounds like a great plan. I wish I were there with you.”

“So do I.”

“I’ll let you go for now. Call me before you go to sleep.”

“I will.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

Rhys

“I APPRECIATE YOU calling me back, Macie.”

“Sure. What’s up?”

“I talked to Riley a few minutes ago. She seemed really off, like something was bothering her, other than losing her IUD and dealing with the aftereffects. Have you talked to her today?”

“No, but I can call her and see what’s going on.”

“Without letting her know that you and I talked?”

Macie chuckled. “Yes, Rhys! Just like I’ve done for you in the past.”

“I could be wrong about all of this, but my gut instinct keeps telling me there’s something else going on with Riley.”

“Any idea of what it could be?”

“I’ll tell you what I fear. Riley is having second thoughts about us.”

“Bullshit on that! She is so happy to be with you again.”

“She’s all I’ve ever wanted and will ever want.”

“I know. Let me call her, and then I’ll let you know what she said.”

“Thanks, Macie.”

AN HOUR LATER

“I know what’s bothering Riley, but if I tell you what it is, I’ll betray Riley’s trust. She told me that I couldn’t tell anyone what happened to her today,” Macie said.

My heart was pounding. “You can’t do this to me.”

“Rhys…”

“Just give me a hint.”

Macie let out a long sigh. “You cannot say anything to Riley. What happened isn’t her fault.”

“I won’t say a word.”

“She ran into Chad outside the dental office today. They politely spoke to each other, and then Chad told her that he needed a root canal and also that he was seeing a therapist for his anger problem.”
