“You really love your job, don’t you?”

“Yes. Do you still love yours?”

“Most days.”

“If you weren’t doing the family business thing, what would you do?”

“Renovate old houses full-time or build new ones.”

“That doesn’t surprise me, Mr. Superman-carpenter. Describe the perfect house for yourself. Is it the one you have, a two-story, a cabin, a brick home, or what?”

“It’s any that has you living in it with me.”

FRIDAY

Riley:Where are you?

Me:With Jackson. We just finished feeding the cows.

Riley:I miss you.

Me:I’m hurrying to get there. It’ll be around 7:30.

Riley:Don’t worry about going to Fort Worth.

Me:???

I saw that Riley was texting again, and then a closeup selfie of her came through. She was smiling seductively and had something tied around her neck, but didn’t appear to have anything on underneath it.

Me:What’s going on, mia bella?

She sent me another selfie, but it wasn’t as close up as the first one. I could see some of the background and recognized it.

“What are you grinning about?” Jackson asked me.

I looked over at him in the driver-seat of his truck. “This.” I showed him the second picture of Riley.

“You lucky dog! She snuck into town to surprise you!”

“Push on the gas, brother!”

After he rushed me to the barn, I hopped into Black Betty and sped to my house. When I opened the front door, I saw Riley standing in the kitchen. She smiled seductively at me again and held out a glass of whiskey over ice in my direction.

Hurrying toward her, I looked at what she was wearing: nothing except a white apron and black high heels. Her hair was pulled up in the back, strands were hanging around her face, and her makeup was dramatic. Goddamn, I was already getting hard.

I took the glass of whiskey out of Riley’s hand and set it on the island as soon as I reached her. Then I grabbed her face and kissed her, knowing she could tell how happy I was to see her and how much I’d missed her. The way she moaned into my mouth told me the same about her feelings toward me.

“How long have you been here?” I asked, pulling my lips away from hers.

“Since noon.”

“How?”

“A water main broke down the street from the dental office early this morning. Jacinda had to reschedule all the patients for next week, so I decided to come here for the weekend. It’s more my style anyway.”

“Your appearance screams ‘city’ right now—but I like it. Riley, I’ve got to fuck you.”

“You’re going to have to wait because I’m in the middle of cooking our supper.”
