That terrified her because she was almost certain he planned to leave her to track down the sector-destroying weapon.

His mission would be extremely dangerous. It could take a long time. Their relationship was still fairly new.

He might never return to her.

She didn’t know what to do with that possibility.

Except make the most of the time they had left together.

They approached their ship.

“Tell me how to disarm the perimeter alarms.” She pushed away her exhaustion. “And I’ll retrieve them.

“I’ve disarmed them remotely.” He continued to carry Talley and Tsadok.

They remained unconscious but she wasn’t concerned. Much. She saw the rise and fall of their forms as they breathed in and out.

“Then I’m retrieving them.” She hurried around the ship, gathering the small devices in her pockets.

Strike had placed them at regular intervals, and she had been with him while he did that. The perimeter alarms were easy to locate.

She returned to Strike. “I think I got them all.”

“You did get them all.” His lips curled upward.

The ramp had already been extended, and the doors to the ship were open.

“I’m thinking we should place them both in the chamber we’ve prepared for Talley.” Kesser entered their ship first. “That way, when they wake, they won’t be alone.” She didn’t want her friend to be scared. “And we’ll leave the doors to the chamber open so they know they’re no longer prisoners.”

“You’re a kind being, my female.” He walked behind her, carrying Talley and Tsadok into the vessel. The exterior doors closed.

“I’m not always kind.” She admitted to that failing. “But I try to be.”

They headed to the private chambers they’d assigned Talley. Kesser moved close to the wall to allow Strike to pass her.

He placed Talley on one side of the sleeping support and Tsadok on the other side.

The sleeping support must’ve been designed for cyborgs. It was huge. Their two unconscious guests had plenty of space.

“Do you think they’re okay?” Kesser gazed at the rescued pair. She’d asked that question multiple times, but she needed the reassurance his answer would grant her.

“According to my scans, your friend and her male are operating within spec.” Strike retrieved a handheld from a horizontal support and pressed it into her palms. “Run a second scan to verify that reading.”

She did as he suggested, first pointing the device at her friend. “Talley is operating within spec.” She used her male’s words. “Tsadok is…” She stared at the small screen. It flashed red. The numbers displayed shocked her. “I think he’s extremely ill, my Strike.”

Alarm gripped Kesser. She had no medical training and very little knowledge of Powluk anatomy. If the male died, it would be war. Talley would be devastated.

And she would be responsible. She would have killed him.

“What should we do?” She gazed at her cyborg, hoping to receive guidance from him.

“What are your results?” Strike looked over her shoulder at the readings. “According to the databases, he’s operating within spec for a Powluk, my female.”

“The screen is flashing red.” That didn’t appear to be within any sort of spec.

Her cyborg touched the handheld. The flashing stopped. “Powluk ranges weren’t loaded.”

“Oh.” Tension eased from her form. Her shoulders lowered. “He’s okay?”
