The prospect of losing her had purged his databases.

Seeking to show her how he felt, he kissed his female hard, infusing the embrace with every turbulent emotion he was experiencing. She received his fervent adoration, his processor-straining fear, his unfettered desperation, and his quiet reverence.

He didn’t hold anything back. She got it all.

When their embrace broke, they both breathed heavily.

Strike leaned his forehead against hers. “You won’t die. We’ll have endless more planet rotations together.”

“And we’ll rescue Talley and Tsadok.” She gave him a tremulous smile. Her beauty threatened to bring him to his body armor-clad knees. “Weapons check.”

She slipped her hands under his cloak and ran her fingers over the guns and blades strapped to his form. Her touching drove him wild.

He did the same for her, skimming his palms over her curves, noting the guns strapped to her flight suit-covered thighs, the blades in her boots, the other weapons hidden in her pockets.

His female didn’t have his strength. She couldn’t carry his arsenal, but she did have sufficient firepower…for a human.

“You’re ready.” She nodded.

“We’re ready.” He slung the pack they’d stocked over his right shoulder, and he picked his female up and draped her over his other shoulder.

“I’m protecting your rear.” She drew two guns.

He chuckled. “You’re protecting the rear.” He carried her through the modified freighter.

“This view is similar to the one I saw the planet rotation we met.” She delighted him with that observation. “The pack is extra. Your rear…I mean…the rear is the same.”

He laughed harder. “Focus, my female.” They had a dangerous mission to complete.

“I’m focused, my male.” Her claiming words warmed his chest.

His female was the most important being in the universe to him.

He would safeguard her with his lifespan.

CHAPTER TEN

The rescue portion of the rescue mission was underway. Kesser’s body vibrated with excitement. And fear. She was no longer a support player. She and her cyborg were the main participants.

Strike carried her out of the modified freighter. She breathed in, counted to ten, breathed out, breathed in, counted to ten, breathed out. The air was warm and humid and smelled like freshly cut vegetation. That helped to calm her.

Her male set small perimeter alarms around their ship. She balanced on his shoulder and watched for hostiles, as he called them.

The bushes behind him moved. She aimed in that direction. Something hopped out of the greenery. She tapped her triggers.

A cute little furry creature with triangle-shaped ears froze in place.

“The stunning function works on creatures.” She whispered that observation.

Her cyborg’s shoulders shook. He was laughing at her.

His joy eased some of her guilt about stunning the little furry creature.

He ran with her. Strike moved quickly but not at his top speed. He had explained, during their training, that it was possible some Powluks had figured out a way to block life-form scans, similar to how his cloak had rendered that process ineffective. Caution was necessary.

The slower pace allowed Kesser to survey their surroundings. She scanned the terrain with her guns drawn, intent on guarding her cyborg’s back.

As they moved, the devastation wrought on the landscape from battles became more and more extreme. Vegetation was carved away until there was only bare soil and rock left. Debris littered the ground. There were blasted-apart robots and parts of ships and unidentified twisted strips of metal scattered everywhere.
