“So much to fight for.” She touched her lips. Her eyes were slightly unfocussed.

He grinned. “We’ll activate the projection first.” He claimed the chair beside hers and engaged that program.

The image of an older, gray-haired female was overlaid over his female. He displayed the footage the Powluks would see on the main viewscreen.

The projected female waved her hands.

“That will never not be unsettling.” His female’s voice originated from the projected female’s mouth.

“The projection is in sync.” He activated the audio next.

“That’s good.” The projected female’s voice was slightly deeper. “Fates.” She covered her mouth with her hands. “It amazes me how you’ve made me sound like her. I doubt my mom could tell the difference.”

“Your speech pattern is your own.” Strike breathed deeply.

His female’s delectable scent also remained the same.

“I’ll stick to our script.” His female had led the process of crafting those words. She had met the other female several times in the past, and they had studied the recorded footage in the databases together.

Strike donned the black cape he’d worn on the surface of Syndiculous 5.

The material, fabricated from a simulated vegetation, should render him invisible to the Powluk systems.

He wrapped the garment around his form, drew up the hood, and tucked his booted feet under his ass. “I’m running a life-form scan.” He accessed the modified freighter’s systems remotely to accomplish that task.

“You were wearing that cloak the moment we met.” The voice belonged to the projected female. The wonder and the something more, an emotion he dared not project, was sourced from his female.

“One life-form is detected—a human female.” The cloak had successfully blocked the scan.

“That’s me.” The projected female grinned.

His lips curled upward. “That’s you.”

“I can do this.” She sounded as though she was speaking to herself. “I’ve talked with her, watched her, heard stories from my mom about her. This?—”

Lights flashed on the console.

“We’re being hailed.” He informed his female of that fact. “Are you ready?”

“I’m ready.” She linked her fingers in front of the stomach as the female she was mimicking often did. And she held her head in the exact same way.

His female would be successful in her much-needed deception.

Strike opened communications.

An image of a male tusked Powluk appeared on the main viewscreen. “Who are you, and why are you entering our territory?” His tone was belligerent.

“I’m Vera Inada, the defense procurement agent for Syndiculous 5.” His female recited the practiced script perfectly. “I’m here to meet with Powlus Zetus’s First Zetus.”

The Powluk wrinkled his nose. “Your kind’s Minister of Defense was just here. Are you planning another war?”

Strike’s female blinked. “Our planets are at peace.”

“That peace won’t last long. According to the rumors,” the male muttered under his breath.

Strike heard him. Clearly.

“You got an authorization code?” The Powluk asked that question louder.
