The butler throws the grilled cheese onto the pan with a sizzle, and steam billows around him.

Ruby attempts a joke. “I can check his head for you, if you like.”

I nod. “Please?” Someone needs to check it.

That elicits a cackle. “If we can get him to stay in one place long enough.” She takes a longer pull of beer this time.

And just when the atmosphere shifts into something a little more relaxed, she turns and heads toward the doorway Jake disappeared through. “Is my bed ready, Frederick?”

“Yes, madame.”

Her bed. I’m guessing she means one here and not back at her house.

She pauses at the threshold. Turns to him. “Come check on me later?” The suggestion behind her words are thick enough to choke a horse. In other words, comecheck on my vagina.

“Yes, madame.”

He doesn’t seem opposed to it. Not that any of the butlers show emotion.

She gives me one last look. “See you in the morning?”

“I’ll be there.” And that’s when it hits me—I don’t know what to wear. “Do I need to wear a dress or something?” I brought a little of everything.

“What you have on is fine,” she offers. “Something casual.” Which isn’t helpful at all. I can’t wear these pants again.

And then she leaves us without so much as a goodbye.
