He grins knowingly.

“What?”

“You’d like to? After that circus in there?”

Fine. I don’t hesitate to call him on his bullshit, so I guess he can call me on mine. “I’m intrigued. And it gives me more time.”

He nods his acceptance.

“Does she do these often?”

“No.” He almost laughs at the thought. “She plans on running for County Commissioner.”

Oh.

He must read the confusion on my face, because he adds, “Don’t worry, you wouldn’t find that online yet.” He pauses for a beat. “And I guess that can be on the record. She’s announcing tomorrow anyway.”

I hate to tell her, but her campaign will be disrupted.

Something inside me deflates at the thought. Meaghan’s claims are still just that—claims. Until they can be investigated further. Sure, some of the pieces line up with the police report, but not all. And sure, I already don’t like Magnolia. But what if Meaghan is just deluded? Or wanting to cause trouble? Hog the spotlight? And I’m helping her stir up trouble for these people for no reason.

She didn’t seem deluded, though. Sad, maybe. Fearful. But not—

Stop it. You did what was asked of you.

It’s done.

Even more reason to use my time wisely here.

“Didn’t see that one coming,” I finally admit.

“Which part?”

“Her running for commissioner.”

I wait to see if he offers any insight.

“Bored, I guess,” he says.

“No,” I counter. “Women like your mom aren’t haphazard.” I know because I’m one of them. We’re willful and driven. We act with purpose. It doesn’t always make sense to others, but there’s a purpose.

He doesn’t disagree, so I must be right. “There is one thing she likes more than money.”

“Appearances?”

He stands, smoothing his jeans. This bench is hardly comfortable.

He looks down at me over his shoulder, the dying sunlight illuminating the blond tips of his hair and lashes. The intensity in his eyes, in his set jaw, makes me go still.

“Power.”
