Chills race over my arms.

“We’re innocent! My son is a liar.”

The camera pans to Ruby, who looks more inconvenienced than scared. “Keep your shit together, Mother. And quit talking.”

My smile widens.

Daphne sighs. “Oh, how the mighty have fallen.”

Yes, they have. They absolutely have.

And I love it with every part of my being.

My phone chimes again and it’s my mom: I KNEW he didn’t betray you. May the Mitchell bitches rot in prison.

Well, okay then. I guess my mom agrees.

More detailsabout the Mitchell family leak over the next couple of weeks as things unfold, and it’s everywhere. Every online news outlet. Daytime news and nighttime news. It’s the spectacle of the year.

The next thing to come out is how Magnolia and Ruby aren’t granted bail because they’re considered flight risks. They both have passports and contacts in France.

The next is how Harris’ condition has improved. What Preston, Nanna, and I feared was true—Ruby was drugging him.

How that will unfold is yet to be seen, but I have a pretty good idea. And hopefully that will involve him fully recovering and testifying against Magnolia and Ruby. Maybe he’ll even get a lesser sentence that way.

Something else that comes out—Magnolia and Draper, Jake’s uncle, were having an affair. And I’ll have to admit, that was a shocker for me. Until I thought it through. According to Preston and Jake’s conversation I overheard at the guest house, Draper wasn’t the best one to run that team, but Magnolia could control him, and that’s what mattered more, I’m sure.

Did he know about Harris being drugged into silence? That hasn’t been reported on yet. I would hope not, but I also don’t discount anything with that family.

What doesn’t shock me, though, is when Jake announces he’s taking the rest of the year off. Fans and the media respond with an outpouring of love and understanding.

He’s their racing prince who’s fighting to make things right. To turn things over to expose the dark underbelly of his family at his own expense.

He’s fighting to help a girl find the closure and healing she needs.

He’s their champion.

A modern-day hero.

Has even been approached about multiple TV and movie deals, according to several stations.

I just wish I could see him the same way. That I could be excited about what he’s doing.

Everything is still colored with the darkness of what happened all those weeks ago at the Mitchell house in McDonough, GA. And honestly, I’m still not all that sure I won’t eventually be targeted by a Mitchell in the future. Sure, Jake saw to it the story came from him and not me. To protect me…possibly. But if there’s anything I’ve learned at all about Magnolia and Ruby—or anyone who craves power, for that matter—is this: They don’t like to be made a fool of.

And I’d be the perfect one for them to funnel their rage at, incarcerated until the trial or not.

Only time will tell.
