“Can you just give me ten minutes? I’d really like to talk and show you what I have.”

“Jake,” I say sternly, borderline incensed. “If there’s anything you want to say to me or show me, you can do it through the door.”

He thinks about it a moment, and just when I think he’s about to give up, he says, “Okay. Through the door.”

I wait for him to continue.

“I know this is a huge ask, but can you promise me something?”

“You’re out of your mind if you think I’ll promise you anything.”

He pauses a beat. “Fair enough. I was just going to ask you to let me say what I’m going to say before you interrupt me or ask me to leave again.”

“No promises,” I remind him.

He takes it. It’s better than nothing. “I hate the way things played out the way they did. I know it looks like I betrayed you.”

Yep.

“When Ruby called me this morning and asked me to come to her room, that she had something she needed to tell me, I knew she figured out who you were. I could hear it in her voice. I knew we were busted.”

And you lied to save your ass and sacrifice mine.

“But I had to play stupid.”

If that’s what you want to call it…

“And pretend I was learning all of this for the first time too. Otherwise, everything would be compromised.”

I huff. But it was compromised anyway. Because you eventually blabbed. The story has been pulled and I’m fired. Meaghan is scared silent again.

Everyone got exactly what they wanted.

Something crinkles like paper, and the peephole flickers like something is in front of it. “This is what I wanted to show you.”

I debate even looking. What if he just wanted to trick me into shooting a hole in my face? “What is it?” I say cautiously.

“It’s a police report.”

“I’ve already seen it.” I’m not that bad of a reporter.

“Not this one, I assure you.”

I consider taking the bait. “What does it say?”

He continues holding it up.

I give in and look, but I’m on edge, ready to jump away at any given moment. “Slide it down a little, I can’t read the top.”

He does as I ask.

The header reads Henry County Police Department. It has the same date and weather conditions as the one I already have my hands on, as well as the same officer.

Wait…

That’s a different officer.

“Slide it up,” I say urgently, my heart gaining speed.
