I would rush him into a hug right now if it weren’t for the wall I need to keep up. He’s not like them. Like his family.

He’s helping me. He’s ready for the truth to set him free.

It’s both brave and crazy. His mom and Ruby will flip.

“Jake,” I say. We need to stop talking about this until we’re in the safety of his car. And I’ll want to encourage him to then find a safe place to hide while this all plays out. Somewhere his family can’t get to him or control what happens.

But before I can say any of that, his phone rings in his back pocket. He pulls it out, his eyebrows drawing together. He answers with an uneasy “Hey.”

He looks to me. “Okay,” he says, short. “Okay. Give me a sec.” He hits the Off icon.

“You okay?”

“Yeah, I’ll be right back.”

Something doesn’t feel right. “Where are you going?”

He doesn’t give me a direct answer, and my stomach hollows. “I’ll be right back,” he repeats. “Start packing, okay?”

What?

“It’s fine,” he assures me when he sees the budding panic on my face. “Just get ready and packed and we’ll leave in a little while.”

“Okay,” I say weakly, and then he leaves.
