“While I’m enjoying this little show, we can’t stay out here. More are coming.”

“Alessandro!” Adriana yells as she turns. Her eyes bulge as she stares at the guy on the ground with a gun in his hand. I pull the trigger before he does, killing him this time. A bullet through his fucking brain.

Kat covers her ears, afraid, as she squeezes her eyes shut. I walk to their front door as Adriana goes to meet Kat. I notice the door is ajar.

“Diana, the window is broken.”

I hold the doorknob, spotting new scratches on the metal surrounding the keyhole.

“Someone was here.”

Chapter ten

Adriana

Kat and I exchange frightened glances as Alessandro slowly pushes the door open with a gun in his other hand. The lights are off inside as he opens the door wide.

“Are you sure you locked the door before stepping out?” Alessandro asks.

“I can bet my ass off that I fucking did,” Kat replies.

Alessandro walks into our apartment first and we follow behind him. He switches on the lights and the house is in a whole mess.

“My God!” Kat exclaims.

I stare in disbelief. I’ve known somewhere in the back of my head that my father could find me someday but not this soon.

The wooden coffee table is lying on the floor, with books scattered around.

“Who are those people? And what do they want from us? You?”

I swallow hard, struggling to find the right words to say to Kat. I don’t want her drawn into my mess.

“Stay here. I’ll go check inside,” Alessandro says. He disappears into the room, leaving Kat and me behind.

“I swear, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

“What do they want from you, Diana?”

“Someone’s trying to kill me,” I lie.

We hear loud, heavy steps coming up the front door. Kat grips my arm with her eyes widening.

“Who’s that?”

“I have no idea,” I whisper.

The door is smashed open in one swift move and three men walk into the house with guns pointed at us. I recognize the first. Sean.

“Adriana,” Sean says, nodding at me. He gives the others a signal to hold Kat and me.

“You scream and I put a fucking bullet through your brain,” Sean says, looking at Kat.

“Leave her out of this,” I grunt, fighting my arms free from the guy holding me.

“Your father would be so pleased to see you.”

Sean walks closer to me and trails the tip of his gun on my chin, stopping at the dip of my neck. My breathing has gotten heavier.
