I manage to slip out of the house without my father knowing. He can’t keep me there forever. I want out already. Out of this fucking life he made for Beatrice and me. I need to escape. And fast.

Just like I predicted, Beatrice’s party was successfully ruined by him.

I narrowly escaped getting locked up again; probably would have been if Beatrice hadn’t lied to cover up for me. Father almost found out I was speaking to Alessandro.

Beatrice keeps saving me. As father’s favorite child, he had no issues believing her word when she admitted that I had lost my phone and that he had probably heard something different.

I owe her. But even though she had saved me and sternly warned me to stop seeing or talking to Malgeri’s son, it’s hard not to. Despite despising this whole mafia world, ironically, he’s the only one I know that can help me escape my own miserable world right now.

I gave into my stubbornness, partially wanting to see if he was fine but also needing his help to run away from this cycle of violence and mafia influence.

It's all I’ve ever wanted. A normal life not constantly watched by armed men or in danger from getting killed by a rival gang. Even though I completely resent Alessandro, he is my last and only option.

Father had his men find me the last time I tried to escape. I can’t let that happen again.

I’m in front of his house, rethinking my decisions. The guards let me in easily. Alessandro must have seen my text about coming here and told them to let me in.

The two-story building is grand, as I take a better look at it this time. The walls are painted white, with some parts of the building made of sturdy bricks. The entrance is grand too, with a beautiful double door.

I take a sharp breath, prepared to enter. Two guards positioned by the door with guns hanging on their shoulders open the door wide for me.

I don’t see Alessandro as I step into his large living room. I take in the beautiful view of the soaring ceilings and elegant chandeliers.

Just like before, the artwork lined up on his walls catches my attention again. I stroll to a medium-sized piece that has a drawing of a strange child with an unusual gaze and blood-stained hands.

“Don't.”

I flinch from his baritone voice. It stops me from tracing the piece with my fingers.

“Sorry, I only wanted to feel it.”

I fully turn to see Alessandro shirtless as he walks down the staircase.

It’s impossible not to stare. His chiseled, tattooed chest and arms steal my gaze as I trail my eyes down his body. His black jeans hang low on his waist, revealing the V-shape just before his lower half.

It’s hot. Too hot. It makes my breath seize for a moment as I feel a heat swell in my insides.

“I would stare, too, if you were topless,” he says, interrupting my dirty thoughts.

The large windows behind the stairs let in plenty of natural light. His body is like a damn work of art under the spotlight.

“I… I…” I stammer. I should be hating this man, especially after how he left me right after I gave my innocent self to him. Yet, his presence does things to me… and I hate that.

“Why did you leave?” He stops a few steps away from me. His gray eyes are all over my body.

I notice his bandaged wrist.

“Are you alright?”

He walks closer. “Answer me, Poppy.”

“Cause you were a fucking asshole. You fucked me −no, you actually took my virginity− and left. Just like that,” I blurt out.

It’s hard to stay mad with him this close. “I waited for hours and just like the dick you are, you never came back. I felt so–”

“Fuck,” he says, cutting me off mid-sentence.
