Every nerve ending in my body comes alive at the same time as the literal shit is scared out of me. I sit up, seeing Zaph. After arriving here, I convinced myself he was nothing more than a figment of an extremely overactive and lonely imagination.

“How’d you get in here? Don’t you have to be invited or something?”

He laughs. “That’s for vampires, not angels.”

“Am I crazy?”

“I don’t think so,” he answers while smiling.

“Did yesterday really happen?”

He looks down. “It did. I’m sorry I put you in danger.”

I sit up, pulling Bob along with me. “What the hell happened back there, Zaph?”

He stands, moving across the small room. “I told you someone would come looking for me. They did.”

“You are running from your brother?”

“Lucy, the less you know…”

I stand, moving closer to him. “Don’t give me that shit. I’m involved now. Do you expect me to run from something I don’t even have a name for?”

He moves closer, matching my energy. “Humans aren’t meant to have knowledge of the angels. That’s the way it’s always been and the way it will remain.”

“Yeah, it’s too late for that. You’re here, I mended your wings…I know. What’s going on, Zaph?” I soften my voice. “Maybe I can help?”

His face softens with my words. “Thank you, but you can’t help. I interfered where I shouldn’t have. For that, I was punished.”

I cross my arms in front of my chest. “You were punished for interfering? What kind of shit is that?”

“It’s our way.”

“Well, I’m not a fan.”

Zaph smirks. “I can see that. It wasn’t the first time I’ve interfered. I have a…problem with that.”

“So, you’re some sort of a rebellious angel?”

“I’m not sure rebellious is the word, but I’ve caused my share of turmoil.” He leans over the bed, petting Bob. “I came to say goodbye and to thank you for your hospitality.”

“You’re leaving?”

“You’re not safe if I’m here.”

“Take me with you,” I blurt in a moment of complete insanity. “I have no family, no friends. No life other than school and a part-time job that barely pays the bills. You can help me write my thesis, and maybe I can help you redeem yourself.”

Zaph smirks. “There is no redemption.”

“That’s a bunch of bullshit.” I cover my mouth. “Sorry for the language. I curse when I’m frustrated.”

“Taking you with me would put you in even more danger. That’s what I’m trying to prevent.”

“Then, I’ll tell everyone. I’ll write a press release with information about you and your…your wings.”
