Chapter 14

Violet

“This was an amazing idea. I don’t know how I could ever thank you.” I pushed my sunglasses down my nose to pin a look onto Zack, who was reclining in a pool lounger next to mine.

“I think we all needed the break. You’re a slave driver, woman. You’ve worked us to the bone.” He showed me his fingers. “My calluses have calluses.”

I cocked a brow at him. “That’s what I’m supposed to do, push your career to another level.”

“We have consistent number-one Billboard hits. What’s the next level?”

I grinned. “There isn’t, which means we’ll have to create it ourselves.”

He laughed.

“We’ve discussed this before. I need to work on my retirement fund.” I began to laugh along with him. Reaching over to him, I gave him a playful swat on the arm. “If that means you have to work your fingers to the bone then that’s how it has to be.”

“I see. So, me and Dylan are just a paycheck to you, huh?” I could see the teasing in his eyes, but his words cut me a little. I really didn’t know what it was that we were doing or if it even meant anything. For all I knew I was just pussy on tap for the two men, though something told me that wasn’t the case.

“What?” His brow furrowed as he stared at me.

“Nothing.” I shook my head and laughed, pushing my glasses back up, covering my eyes. I didn’t want him to be able to read anything I was feeling, especially when I wasn’t sure what I was feeling myself.

But I knew that was a lie. I did know what I was feeling. I was falling for the guys, both of them, and it scared me shitless. What kind of situation was this? The heyday the press would have if they caught wind of the fact I was sleeping with both Zack and Dylan! Worse yet, if they found out that we’d had a threesome. This was well beyond what I was used to and knew how to handle.

“Doesn’t seem like nothing.”

I gave him a dismissive wave. “To change the subject, what got you and Dylan playing together?”

He took a deep breath in and slowly released it. “That’s a long story.”

“It’s a good thing we have time.” I was so grateful to change the subject. Things were getting a little too heavy for my liking.

“We’ve known each other for what feels like forever. We met in a foster home.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah.” He ran a hand through his hair as he clucked his tongue off the roof of his mouth. “Both of our parents are passed away. I think you know that.”

I nodded. “I do.”

“I suppose you could call it fate, really. We both were fascinated with the guitar and so we both gathered money every way possible. Some of the ways legit, some not so legit.” He shrugged. “When you’re thirteen and feel like you don’t have anyone in the world then you do what you have to do to survive. A part of me felt that if no one in the world would have our backs then why should we care about them? We were hellions. At least we were until we found music. As I say, we gathered the money and both bought guitars and began to self-learn.”

“You never had lessons? Not one?”

“There was someone at the foster home who knew some basics, that got us going, but for the most part we learned on our own.”

“Wow. That’s impressive.”

“If you have a good ear it’s not all that hard. We managed to get some money to buy a couple of do-it-yourself guitar guides to learn the notes and such.”

I nodded. I couldn’t imagine how hard it must have been. Some people pay top dollar to learn to play and don’t even become half as good as Zack and Dylan. When Dylan took a solo and began to work the strings of his guitar it was total magic.

“Once we thought we were okay enough, we began to play on the street. We were perhaps fifteen at the time. A couple of young kids from the streets get a lot of pity tips, but as we went along I like to think the tips came more because of our skill than because we were a couple of street kids needing money for a sandwich.”

“I see.” I had a number of questions but feared that if I asked then it would interrupt the story and I might never hear it all.

“We wanted to make a demo so we saved our money and finally we had enough. It took a lot of restraint to not spend that money.”
