Chapter 7

One week later

Violet

Wow. Just…wow. Smiling, I flopped down onto the bed and squealed. Hypnotic’s tour was now solidly booked and I’d scored them a couple of high-profile interviews with a couple of talk shows. The guys were so charismatic that the interviews would be amazing and only add to their raging popularity.

To make things even better, I’d come to an understanding with the guys; Zack and Dylan in particular. We’d grown to become friends over the past week and I think despite all the hiccups we’d had in the beginning, we’d finally gotten into a groove that respected the manager-and-talent relationship. Yes, Zack would tease and flirt, but I’d come to understand that his teasing was all in the spirit of fun, as was Dylan’s.

Overall, we were making out good and made a great team.

Carter was right. I could do this. I had the talent and the ambition to be one of the top managers in the industry, just like my father had been. Sudden tears sprang to my eyes and I sat up. It was moments like this that losing my parents so young really hit me hard. That, in addition to not having a spouse, just added to the emptiness that I felt more often than I’d let myself to admit. I’d kill to have a family to share my successes and news with. But I did have Alyssa, and in most ways she was just as good as family.

I gave my head a shake and stood. A dip in the hot tub with a good book would be just what the doctor ordered, so to speak. The hotel we were at tonight had a hot tub that overlooked the beach and ocean. The view in the daytime was very pretty; I’d bet the view at close to midnight would be incredible and with any luck there wouldn’t be anyone down there. Access to the pool and hot tub area was restricted to most guests after 10pm, but there were a few exceptions, namely myself and the band.

Stripping down, I wiggled myself into a black bikini. Not one of those uber-revealing ones, but one with a high waist and decent boob coverage. Not sure if they had towels down at the pool area or not, I didn’t want to risk it, so I grabbed the largest towel in the bathroom and wrapped it around my waist. Grabbing a bottle of wine and a book, I made my way down to the hot tub and pool area. I rarely drank, but tonight I’d celebrate – in moderation.

Swiping my card in the entry system for the pool area, I pushed the glass door open. As expected the area was deserted. The hot summer air felt amazing as I made my way to the hot tub. Removing my towel, I placed it on a chair nearby and entered the tub, with my book in one hand and the bottle of wine in the other. The hotel we were staying at was a U shape, partially circling the pool, each room having a view of the pool area, and, further out, the ocean. A small part of me was self-conscious, knowing that at any time someone could be watching me, but that fear was quickly dismissed. I had to stop worrying about other people and enjoy life; that was the way the guys did it and they seemed pretty damned happy to me.

The water felt amazing as I sank down into the pool, strategically situating myself over a jet and sinking down to chest level. Now this was the life, I thought as I placed my book on the side of the tub, uncorked the wine bottle that had been pre-chilled and took a long, deep drink from the bottle, before sinking deeper into the pool, placing the bottle behind me and closing my eyes.

When people talked about living their best life, I’m positive this is what they were talking about. My life was on a serious upward track and it felt good.

“Mind some company?”

I’d almost dozed off in the hot tub, but the voice pulled me violently from my sedative state. I gasped as I sat up quickly and my eyes sprang open to see Zack standing at the side of the hot tub, in a pair of black swim trunks.

“You scared the shit out of me!” I gasped, my heart thumping wildly in my chest.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to.” He didn’t wait for me to grant him permission. He dropped his towel on a chair and stepped in, sitting next to me in the hot tub.

“Uh-huh.” Remembering the wine, I grabbed the bottle and took another drink. As I placed the bottle back on the ledge of the hot tub, I got an immediate head rush. I rarely drank, so when I did it hit me like a ton of bricks.

“It’s been a crazy week. How are you holding up?” he asked.

Excitement began to swell up within me. “I’m doing amazing actually. We started off pretty rocky and I’ll admit I wasn’t sure I even wanted to deal with a cocky dick like you, but—”

He began laughing. “Cocky dick? Really? That’s how you see me?”

I cocked a brow at him. “You’re going to try and deny it?”

He grinned and his face turned a shade of red.

“Wow, is the great Zack Wyatt actually embarrassed by something? I’m in shock!”

“I am human; I do get embarrassed from time to time.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” I gave his shoulder a little nudge. “As I was saying. We seem to have found our groove with each other and the tour is officially booked up. In addition, I have lined you guys up with a couple phenomenal interviews. But here’s the best part.”

“What?”

“Promise you’ll contain your excitement.” I wanted to lead him along for just a little while longer.

“I’ll manage. What is it?”

I smiled, barely able to hold back myself. “You’re going to be headlining the half-time show at the Superbowl!” I gave him a few excited slaps on the shoulder.

His expression was blank as he stared at me. Was he unhappy with that? It was one of the most prestigious events a band could play at.
