“It is unwise to speak to a female who is a frya and the mate of the crown elect.” The smirk on Agent Scarlatti’s face disappeared. You didn’t talk to someone with diplomatic immunity like that.

“Does that make her the queen in waiting?”

“Yes, although you can call her princess Jenna.”

Jenna went to her tiptoes. SaKura was too tall and she had looked over his arm, grinning at the agent.

There was a growl coming from the side of the house.

“How did he get out?” SaKura asked, more to himself than to the surrounding people. “Kala, come here.”

Agent Scarlatti got a glimpse of Kala and went for his gun while he stepped back.

“I suggest you stay still, agent, or move and make yourself prey for Kala to hunt.” The agent didn’t move a muscle.

SaKura moved out of the doorway to greet his pet, giving Jenna her first glimpse of Kala. He was somewhere between a massive wolf and a horse. A full-grown one. That might not have been a problem, but Kala had sharp teeth that were for tearing prey apart and what looked like a collar of thorns. His claws were massive. If there was a fight, Jenna didn’t doubt Kala would win.

“Puppy!” Jenna went down on her knees and started petting Kala.

“You’re one fry short of a happy meal. Agent Brutus told me, but I wasn’t sure until now.”

“My name is Jenna and you and I are going to be friends until I escape that one’s clutches.”

She tilted her head in SaKura’s direction while ignoring Agent Scarlatti. “You’re a good boy, yes you are.”

SaKura stood back and watched his mate charm his Draxar, a vicious pet, unless he was around his master.

“Should she be able to do that?” Agent Scarlatti whispered. He had his gun in his hand, waiting for that monster dog to tear Jenna apart. He wasn’t sure who he would shoot first. Jenna to put her out of her misery or the monster dog that looked like he could kill them all.

“No, just another test passed.”

“Test?” Agent Scarlatti perked up. He took a step closer to SaKura but stopped when that vicious growl came and the head of the alien monster the size of a horse’s head turned to look at him. There was death and dismemberment in Kala’s eyes.

“He’s so adorable,” Agent Scarlatti said. He tripped over his own words, wondering if he could make it to his car before Kala tore him apart. The purple and orange leathery skin on the animal was strange, not something he was used to seeing.

“Don’t run, agent. Kala will patrol my land. He dislikes visitors who haven’t received clearance. Tell your government I would be unhappy with any unsanctioned deaths.”

“Unsanctioned deaths?” Agent Scarlatti almost squeaked.

“Agent, are all the deaths committed by the royal family, your government?” he corrected his speech. “Sanctioned.”

“We don’t go around killing because we want to.”

“Who the… Why are you lying? You almost made me curse, that was so funny. No, SaKura, the government does not approve of every death caused by a government official.

Jenna was rubbing Kala, who was getting closer and trying to lie on her lap like he was a small lap dog. “What do you feed him?”

“He hunts for his food. The woods are teaming with wildlife. He will eat well.”

“Go eat. We will be here when you’ve filled your belly.” She gave Kala one more hard rub around his ears before he took off.

Jenna took a good look at Agent Scarlatti and then at SaKura. She trusted one more than the other and as soon as the agent was gone, she’d get to the bottom of this.

“Come in agent, I’ll cook breakfast.” She meant burn breakfast, but he didn’t have to know that.

Chapter Seven

Agent Scarlatti decided not to come inside. He murmured something about Kala and took off after giving SaKura a hard look.
