More tears. More fear.

The door burst open behind me before he could go any further. His son, Cameron, came into frame as I tried to cover myself.

‘Come on, you’re needed downstairs.’

‘Five fucking minutes, Cam. It won’t take me long to fill her up.’

Cam’s face screwed up as he took in my tear-stained face and the heated red marks covering my cheeks.

Please take pity. Please help me.

I mouthed the help me to him. He quickly averted his eyes.

‘The Cosgrove deal has gone tits up, we need to get over there now. They’ve got the rat contained, and I need to ask him some questions before our guys get to gun-happy.’

Harold grumbled as he buckled up his belt, before reaching out and grabbing my face firmly in his grip. ‘Two days to wait until you get the rest of me. However, will you manage? I’ll be looking forward to it.’

When he let me go, I curled up on the sofa, pulling my trousers back into place and drawing my knees up to my chest. Enough tears to drown me and great-wracking sobs that shook the couch beneath me.

Hours later, Maeve found me there, taking in my bruised cheeks and salt-stained face.

‘What happened?’ she said, scooping me up against her and smoothing my hair.

‘Harold.’

‘Oh Esther, I’m sorry.’

‘You don’t have to be. But he will.’

‘Come on, let’s get you in the shower and find you something to eat. I’ll stay over with you in case he comes back.’

Next time I’d be ready. Stick him through with a knife while he was worrying about his cock.

It was the only pleasure he’d actually be able to bring me.

THIRTY-EIGHT

ALEC

The gravel crunched beneath my feet as I walked up the McGowan’s driveway, the clouds overhead thick and grey and casting a headache inducing-light over the mansion.

Being known to the family, and trusted despite my recent transgression, the guys let me through with a brief nod and nothing more. I took the stairs two at a time, hoping I wouldn’t run into anyone else before I found Maeve. I might lose my nerve if I did.

I rapped on her door and waited, sending up a silent prayer. Success. I heard her shuffling about before coming to the door, opening it without hesitation.

Maeve’s eyebrows rose as she saw me, her arms crossing over her chest as she leant against the doorframe.

‘What can I do for you?’ she said.

‘Can I come in?’ I glanced up the long, opulent corridor, relieved to find it remained empty.

‘To my room? Why?’

‘I need to talk to you.’

‘About Esther?’

‘Yes.’
