‘A boyfriend?’

‘I don’t think that’s any of your business, Tim.’ I fiddled with my keys, trying to get the right one so I could escape my weird neighbour’s interrogation.

‘Sorry. No, of course it isn’t. I just like to look out for you girls. On your own in the city and all.’

‘We’re okay. Thanks.’

My door swung open, and Tim fidgeted as he dropped his eyes to the floor. ‘Okay. Sorry. Go safe, yeah?’

‘So bloody weird,’ I muttered to myself as I locked the door behind me.

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

LOGAN

Maeve topped up my glass with a rich red wine while Ewen slapped two boxes of pizza on the counter.

‘It feels like forever since we’ve done this,’ said Maeve as she perched on a barstool and grabbed a slice, the mozzarella making a long, stringy bridge between the box and her hand.

‘That’s because you are all boring marrieds now,’ Ewen replied with a smirk.

‘I’m not,’ I added.

‘As good as.’

‘Ewen’s just jealous because he’s a single pringle,’ Maeve said.

‘Why would I be jealous? I’m single and own a sex club, I’ve got filth on tap. With whomever I fancy. You’re stuck to one dick for life.’

Maeve grinned. ‘It’s a great dick, though.’

‘Too much information,’ Ewen said, ‘speaking of too much information, we’ve not had nearly enough about what you got up to at Rosenhall. It’s been forever since I’ve seen Alfie.’

‘What makes you think I got up to anything?’

‘Because you’ve been weird ever since you got back. Mopey. Even more of a grump than usual.’

As much as I’d tried to just get on with work and pretend like the Valentina situation hadn’t happened, I was plagued with a mind full of her. Would talking about it help?

I looked from Ewen to Maeve, not used to letting people into my private thoughts.

‘I met someone and I can’t stop thinking about her.’

I’d leave out the details about her being too young for me and Nicole’s cousin, I didn’t need them to judge me any harder than I was judging myself.

‘At Rosenhall?’ Maeve asked, her eyes widening as she put her half-eaten slice of pizza down.

‘Yeah. She’s… fuck she’s amazing. Pretty, sweet, and sexy as all hell. I wasn’t prepared for it.’

‘And what does your fiancée think about you dipping your wick in another pot of wax? Ewen said.

‘Nicole and I have an agreement.’

‘Shit, Logan, what a mess.’ Maeve said. ‘What are you doing? What kind of marriage can you build on agreements to sleep with other people?’

‘It’s not the first marriage of convenience, nor will it be the last. It’s what we need to expand. You married our enemy and figured it out.’

‘Yeah, but I had no choice. You’re choosing to walk into this like an idiot.’ Pink spots appeared on my sister’s cheeks as she got worked up.
