Lara slid an arm around my shoulder, pulling me into a cuddle before crossing her legs on the sofa and facing me. ‘So he rocked your world, then?’
‘Something like that.’ I sniffed as I topped my wine up. ‘It was the most intense few days of my life. He even let me sleep with his friend without being jealous. It was crazy.’
‘You lucky bitch,’ Lara said, taking a swing of wine from the few mouthfuls left in the bottle. ‘He must be good if he fucked you so hard you fell in love with him.’
‘It’s not love. At least I don’t think it is.’
‘Are you feeling sick at the idea of not seeing him again? Trying to invent ways in your head to bump into him? Does the idea of him marrying your cousin make you want to stab her?’
I nodded through a smile, knowing that she was exaggerating.
‘You’ve got it bad, kid. The good news is that there are a whole heap of guys out there who can rail you like a pro and not be involved with your family members.’
‘But I don’t want someone else.’
‘You’ve just been dicknotized, Valentina. The best remedy for that is to find a superior dick and ride the ever-loving shit out of it. What about the friend?’
‘He lives miles away. Having him involved was fun, but he doesn’t make me feel like Logan does. His dick was pierced all the way up, though. Like a whole ladder’s worth.’
‘No fucking way? You’re such a lucky bitch. Next time I should come with you.’
I didn’t mention Edwards, as I didn’t need her worrying about that.
‘Do you think he’ll go through with it? Marrying Nicole?’
‘Did he give you any sign he wouldn’t?’
‘No. He was pretty clear that us sleeping together was a one occasion thing. She doesn’t even want him. He could still come to me.’
‘You deserve better than your cousin’s seconds, babe. You’ll find a man who worships you the way you deserve. You’re beautiful, kind, sexy, and you bake like an absolute goddess. Any guy would be lucky to have you.’
‘Thanks Lara,’ I said as she grabbed another slice of pizza.
‘Do you want to watch a movie?’
‘I think I’m going to get some shuteye. I told mum I’d meet her early and I’m exhausted. It’s been a long week.’
‘No worries. Just let me know if you need anything.’
Curling up in my bed did little to bring on sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I imagined being tangled up in Logan’s arms, his lips kissing sweet words into my neck.
‘I want to pay it,’ I said, putting a heaped spoon of sugar into my coffee as my mum shook her head.
‘You can’t afford to do that.’
‘I can.’ I’d seen the six-figure amount in my account that morning, and stood staring at my phone for a good ten minutes before squealing with Lara over it. It seemed almost criminal to me I’d enjoyed myself so thoroughly and also made so much money from it.
‘Love, I know you make okay money doing... what you do. But you need to keep it. It might not be a forever job.’
‘I made a lot of money, Mum. And I want to do this for you. I want you to not owe anything to Uncle Tony. Please? You did so much for me growing up, and I can finally repay you.’
‘You don’t need to repay me. I’m your mother. I love you.’
‘Please?’
My mum tore at her napkin as she stared down into her lap. ‘It’s too much.’
‘It’s not.’
