“You’re a meticulous man. Surely a mere woman can’t be your undoing,” he says in a tone laced with mockery.

I smile and look up at him. Donatello closes his eyes, muttering under his breath.

I get up and walk over to Bunny, who is a few inches shorter than me.

“The next time I say this, it won’t be with mere words. We respect women and children here,” I say tightly.

He smiles. “Of course, how could I forget how honorable you are, my brother? So honorable you are, that you’re fucking a woman you’re holding hostage!”

There is no telling what would have happened in the next second if Donatello hadn’t stepped between us. He turns to Bunny and pushes him back.

“Apologize to Antonio now,” he says. Bunny scoffs.

“Sorry, brother,” he says before he walks off in the opposite direction.

Donatello turns to me. “He’s still salty about the black eye. You’ve never hit him before,” he says.

I sigh and return to my seat.

“I don’t understand what your deal is with this woman, but I don’t have a good feeling about this, Antonio,” he says.

“I’ll handle it,” I say.

He nods. “If you say so, I trust you.”

As soon as he walks away, I bury my face in my hands.

Why am I not angry at the thought of her trying to outsmart me by running away?

Why am I so happy that she returned?

I open the door to her room, and I find her sitting on the bed. As she sees me, she gets up with her eyes wide.

“I’ll ask you three questions, Alyssa. Do yourself a damn favor and be honest with me,” I say.

She swallows. “What’s my punishment for being dishonest?” she asks.

“Do you want to find out?” I ask.

She shakes her head.

“Good! How did you get out of the mansion?” I ask.

“I scaled the wall,” she replies.

“How did you get by the guards?” I ask.

“I distracted them,” she answers.

Those incompetent bastards. I vow to deal with them later.

“Did you meet anyone when you left the mansion?”

She swallows and looks away for the first time since I started querying her. All the other questions she answers look into my eyes.

“I met Giovanni,” she replies.

Donatello’s suspicions and mine were correct; she did meet Giovanni.
