“It is.”

“It’s not about your dad, is it?”

Jacob scrunched up his nose. “No.”

“You sure? He can be grumpy.”

“But he’s not a monkey.”

“Hmm. I guess you’re right.”

Paige opened the book to the first page, and a moment later, felt Jacob burrowing against her side. The action gave her pause, and as she looked down at his slightly damp buzzed hair, it occurred to her this was how her life could be, every night. The thought was as thrilling as it was unexpected because it made her realize she was now thinking in terms of what could be, instead of what could have been.

It was liberating. So very, very liberating.

Clearing her throat to get rid of the lump that had suddenly taken residence there, she turned her attention to the book in her hands, and for the first time in her life, read a bedtime story to a child.

Chapter 81

Paige wasn’t sure what woke her up—the sound of Marshmallow howling in the middle of the night, or David curling up behind her on the sectional.

Quietly, he said, “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“It’s okay. Everything good at your mom’s?” she asked sleepily.

“For the most part. She needs a new washing machine, but there doesn’t seem to be any real water damage in her laundry room or kitchen,” he replied, burying his face in her neck.

“Good.”

“So, was everything good here?”

“It was great.”

“Yeah? No issues? You didn’t have to administer first aid or bust out the fire extinguisher?”

“No,” she said with a sleepy chuckle. “We had a good time and he was asleep before I finished Grumpy Monkey. The second time.”

“The second time? You got played.”

“Whatever.”

“So, are you sure he was asleep, and not in a diabetic coma?”

Paige elbowed him in the ribs, making him grunt. “Very funny.”

“I was being serious.”

She was silent for a moment, then said, “So, there was one thing. I saw him pee. Sort of. I mean, I wasn’t watching or anything, so I guess I heard him pee. You know, in the bathroom.”

“I figured that’s where it happened.”

“You don’t think that’s weird? That he peed in front of me?”

“Do you?”

“I … don’t know. Maybe.”

“Well, you’ve bathed him, so I guess it’s not that big of a deal to him.”
