DAVID: Anyway, when he found out what I was doing for you, he wanted to add a Moon Pie for you.

PAIGE: That’s so sweet. Tell him how much I appreciate it. If I hadn’t eaten it already, I’d send a picture of me stuffing my face.

Chapter 67

While pleased with how the past week had played out, David wanted to push the envelope a little. He recalled the conversation with Evan, specifically the part where David said he didn’t think using sex to make amends would work with Paige because she wasn’t wired that way. However, at 4 a.m. on Saturday, when he woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep, it occurred to him maybe that wasn’t necessarily true, at least not anymore. Paige was markedly different now and it might work with her. At any rate, he wouldn’t know unless he tried, right?

Right. Fortune favors the bold, and all that.

But it couldn’t be some quickie up against a wall. It had to be romantic and meaningful, and help to re-establish some of the trust he’d flushed down the toilet.

And just like that … he knew what to do. But first, he needed to figure out the logistics, so he grabbed his phone and sent a text to Paige.

DAVID: How late are you working tonight?

PAIGE: Probably until 7 p.m.

He figured she didn’t have plans, but he asked anyway.

DAVID: Are you doing anything after that?

PAIGE: Besides going home and keeling over? No.

DAVID: Good. That’s perfect.

PAIGE: It is? Why?

DAVID: You’ll find out tonight at 8 p.m.

When Paige opened her door that night, David noted how exhausted she looked. She was still dressed in work attire—black slacks and a floral tunic blouse—and had a glass of wine in her hand.

“Come on in,” she invited him, and as she closed the door behind him, raised her glass and took a drink.

Before she could lower her hand, he took the glass from her, helped himself to a long drink, then handed it back.

“Have you eaten, already?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Real food?”

“Yes, real food.”

“Good.” He held up the bag he was holding. “Let’s get started, then.”

His enthusiasm seemed to make her a little nervous. “What do you have in there?”

“You’ll see. But first … this.” He cupped her face with his free hand and leaned down to give her a deep kiss, one that didn’t hold anything back. When he finally pulled away, he murmured, “Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For letting me kiss you.”

“Oh. Um, you’re welcome.”

“I’ve really missed that.”

Heart pounding, Paige swallowed hard. “Me, too.”
