Paige chuckled. “Not today. But how about—” she skipped over every day of the following week because her work schedule was total garbage, and landed on, “—next Sunday?”

“Okay.”

He was obviously disappointed, so Paige told him, “It’ll be worth the wait. I promise.”

Standing up, she turned to David.

“Thanks for coming,” he told her quietly.

“You’re welcome.”

Then, while Jacob became preoccupied with looking at something on the ground, David planted a kiss on her.

Chapter 66

On Monday morning, after dropping Jacob off at preschool, David stopped by a florist. He bypassed all the pre-made arrangements and headed to the refrigerated display case full of roses. The red ones were probably the obvious choice, but the second he saw the blush-pink roses, he knew they were the ones. After placing the order, he penned a note and stuck it in the little envelope, then handed it to the cashier.

“Special occasion?” she asked.

“No. Special woman.”

Paige glanced up as Andrea walked into her office, almost hidden behind a large vase filled with pink roses.

“These were just delivered for you,” Andrea said, looking around for a place to set the vase down, finally settling for the top of a filing cabinet, since every other surface was too cluttered.

Paige blinked at what had to be at least three dozen roses, before getting up to check them out. She knew they were probably from David, and when she plucked the small envelope from the plastic holder and pulled the card out, she wasn’t surprised to see his handwriting.

Paige:

Pink roses can symbolize admiration, sweetness, or sympathy, but I got these because they’re the exact color of your nipples after I suck on them.

David

“Whoa,” said Andrea, only to tack on dryly, “Sorry. I probably shouldn’t have read that.”

Paige slapped the card to her chest, even though the damage had already been done, and felt her face burst into flames. God, she hated Andrea.

Taking a deep breath, Paige turned to her assistant, then pointed to the door. With an unapologetic Oops look on her face, Andrea vacated the office, and once Paige was alone, she took a moment to inhale the fragrance of the roses before sending David a text.

PAIGE: I just got your flowers. Thank you … they’re beautiful.

DAVID: You’re welcome.

PAIGE: Did you happen to buy every pink rose in the store?

DAVID: I did, actually.

PAIGE: Are you crazy?

DAVID: They made me think of you, so I had to get them all.

PAIGE: Speaking of which … Andrea read your note over my shoulder, so now she knows what color my nipples are after you suck on them.

David read that twice, and then he began laughing so hard, his eyes actually watered.

David made sure that Tuesday’s delivery for Paige was less problematic, playing it safe with lunch from a nearby deli … and no note.

On Wednesday, when Andrea came into Paige’s office with a small square package, she made sure Andrea was gone before opening it. The return address—from a company called Mystical Energy—seemed innocent enough, but she wasn’t taking any chances.
