“And look how great life turned out for you.”

“Exactly.”

Monica stepped right into that one. She couldn’t even blame it on the wine.

“Fine.” She rolled her eyes. “Maybe you’re right.”

“You know damn well we are.” Trista slapped her leg.

One of the first things Monica had done, the second they walked through her door, was shed her work attire. Now, they were all curled up, on her giant couch, in sweatpants and oversized shirts among the throw pillows. The Chinese food was forgotten and even the wineglasses were now resting on the coffee table.

“I missed you guys.”

There was a reason she didn’t drink wine often. As an emotional drunk, with each glass she consumed, the higher the probability there was for tears.

Like now.

“I mean it. You both moved away to Texas and left me here all by myself.” She waved Ash off when her friend tried to speak. “I know I told you to go, and I know my dream was to run your father’s company, but sometimes it gets lonely. I get lonely.”

Three years of sadness suddenly flowed out of her. She had done her best to work so much that there was no time to think about how she felt, but right now, with her best friends squeezed in on either side of her, she couldn’t hide it any longer.

“Oh, honey.” Ash pulled Monica’s head down into her large milk-filled boobs. Her best friend had a decent rack before she got pregnant, but now the damn things were something she envied. “I’m such a shitty friend for not realizing how lonely you were before this. I should never have let it drag out this long.”

“That makes two of us.” Trista smooshed herself into her other side and wrapped her arms around the two of them. “At least Ash has an excuse. She was busy making a baby and then taking care of the small human. I’m just a shitty person who got busy.”

Monica sniffled. “Neither of you is shitty. I’ve been saying things are fine for months because I figured if I said it enough, I could manifest it to be true.”

It sucked when reality smacked a person in the face.

“Well, we’re here now, and we aren’t leaving until we make sure things are made right. That includes at work and with this Luke fella. First thing tomorrow you’re going to call him and apologize for ignoring him. Then you’re going to finish work on time for once and go out on a real date.”

A real date sounded like heaven.

“I’m not . . .”

The doorbell ringing cut her off.

“I wonder who that could be?”

Trista was pushing off the couch before she could tell her friend that she never got visitors. The front door was on the other side of the living room wall, so instead of seeing who it was, all she had to go off of was Trista’s charming voice when the door opened.

“Well, hello there, sexy. And just who might you be?”

CHAPTER TEN

This was a bad idea. Luke looked at Monica’s townhouse from the street and cursed himself for his rash decision. She was ignoring him. The lights were on, so it was obvious she was awake. It should’ve been a sign to walk away and cut his losses while he was ahead.

Yet he couldn’t do it. Not until he laid eyes on her and assured himself she was safe. Then he would ask her if she had changed her mind.

And if she did?

Then he would need to come up with a plan B because there was no way he was going to leave her unprotected when Fletcher was in the wind. He would walk away, because he wasn’t a stalker, but his friends would watch her. They would do that for him.

Here goes nothing.

Before he could change his mind, Luke strolled up to the front door and pressed the doorbell. Despite the lights inside, he still half expected Monica not to answer the door. Color him surprised when seconds later, the piece of wood flung open.

“Well, hello there, sexy. And just who might you be?”
