There’s a knock at the door, so I get up to check who it is through the peephole. When I see Colin’s familiar face, I swing the door open.

“Colin, what are you doing up here?” I ask, confused by his presence. “Can I get you a coffee or tea?”

“No, thank you, Jasmine, but it’s sweet of you to offer. I was only dropping off a delivery for you.” He smiles, handing me a manila package.

“Oh, I didn’t order anything. It must be for Elio.”

“It has your name on it.” He raises his brow, smiling before tipping his hat and heading back to the elevator.

“Thank you. Have a good night,” I call out to him, and he says the same.

Back in the apartment, I sit on the couch, tearing into the package. I pull out a book and realize it’s the second one in the hockey series I’ve been reading, the one Elio read to me when I got sick two weeks ago.

There’s a note between the pages, so I pull it out and read it.

You said you don’t like receiving flowers, so I thought a book would be a good replacement to put a smile on your face

- Your roomie.

My hand goes over my chest, feeling my heart wanting to break free with the way it’s pounding against it. I wish I didn’t feel something over this gesture, like I did for all the other things he’s done for me, but I can’t stop it.

He listens to me and does things for me that no one else has. These are specific, curated, and special to me.

Before I can go down a rabbit hole of sorting out my feelings for him, Aurora’s face lights up on my phone, right on time for her incoming daily call.

“Jasmine, I cannot wait to see your face! I miss you,” Aurora whines through the screen, pouting at me.

“I know. I miss you more, Ro. Only two more weeks.”

“I have a game to play and then I can crush you with the world’s tightest hug.”

I smile, feeling much better than I did a few days ago. “I can’t wait to watch you play at that kind of level. I’m so proud of you!”

“Thank you.” She blushes, a wide smile on her lips. “Then we’re going to the Halloween party, right?”

“Yeah, it’s at Beers n Cheers. I’m excited. My costume this year is going to be hilarious.” I smirk devilishly.

“I bet. You always do something witty yet cute. Cam and I are being basic, but I’m keeping it a secret,” she says, pretending to zip her lips and lock them.

“What are you two up to this weekend?” I ask.

“We’re going to my aunt’s house for dinner tonight, then tomorrow we’re having a beach day, just the two of us.” She brightens like a girl in love, and it makes me happy to see it. I never thought Aurora would settle down this early in life, but she did. “How about you?”

“You guys are so cute, it’s almost gross.” I snicker. “I’m cat-sitting for the weekend since Elio is away for their first game, but Camille and I are going out tonight. We both need to dance some steam off from midterms.”

Aurora waggles her brows at me suggestively. “Oh, Elio, I still can’t believe he read to you and you didn’t jump his bones.”

“Listen, it’s not like that. We’re roommates who help each other out, okay?” I defend, doing my best to sound serious. I opt not to tell her about the book he sent me because I know it’ll only weaken my argument.

“You could help each other out with a few orgasms,” she quips.

“Oh, my God, Aurora! Not going to happen. He’s older, experienced, and will not want to walk me through everything I need to be walked through.”

“Minnie, you have more vibrators than the average person and have watched plenty of porn. I’m sure you don’t need that much of a walkthrough. Plus, a lot of guys find teaching girls what they like hot. I know I thought it was hot when I taught Cam what I liked,” she muses.

I mull it over, knowing she’s right. “That may be true, but it doesn’t change the fact that we’re off-limits to each other. My dad told both of us to stay away.”

“Is your father the one living your life?” she questions.
