“Friends. I don’t think we are anywhere beyond friends,” she said to him on one such casual meet of theirs in a coffee shop.

“We can be friends with benefits,” he offered shamelessly.

“Shut up, Kunal. I have to concentrate on my career, and nothing else can be more important to me than that.”

Kunal smirked and leaned back in his chair.

“Hmm. How about I enhance your chances to be on the top of your career within a year?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…” He leaned forward again, keeping his hands on the table. “You know my dad has contacts, and he can change your life. My one word to him, and he can get you the desired modeling contracts.”

Maya’s face brightened.

“Will you put in a word for me to your father?”

“I will. Why not? I have seen you performing. You are the best in your team. I don’t see why you shouldn’t get all the success.”

Maya’s mind raced.

“But every success comes with a price,” he added. “Are you ready to pay that price, Maya?”

Maya’s smile faded away. She had heard some incidents that happened with her other modeling friends. They were offered high projects, but only after they offered something favorable in return. She was so much against that sole idea.

“What kind of price?” she stammered. She could never expect Kunal to be one of them. He had always been so polite and kind.

“Hey, you look scared. Don’t be.” He immediately offered her some water to drink. “Kunal, come to the point,” Maya insisted.

“It’s nothing disgusting, as you think it is. But yes, it needs skills, and I somehow feel you are the best suitor for this role.”

“What role?” she snapped.

“I want you to lure my stepbrother, Ranveer Malhotra.”

Maya dropped the glass of water from her hands. Was he insane?

“Look, he is rich and has special tastes for women. But he doesn’t believe anyone so easily. A simple girl like you can invoke that trust in him, which no other woman could do so far. Obviously, to do that, it’s not enough for you to be just his friend. You need to come closer to him… so much closer that he shares all his secrets with you… and then you will share those with me,” Kunal continued.

“Why would you want me to do that?”

“Because I want to defame that guy, get him on roads,” he confessed with an evil grin.

Maya realized she had always built a wrong impression about Kunal. He was not what he pretended to be. He was worse. His thoughts disgusted her.

“We will pay you a high price, plus you will surpass all your seniors and get the best modeling offers, I promise,” he said, holding her hand.

Maya shrugged off his hold.

“I won’t do this.”

“Maya, you are getting scared for no reason. This is the least I was asking you to do. Other models in your position have done the worst to get where they want to be.”

“Enough.” Maya got up from the chair, almost drawing other couples' attention. “Don’t you ever meet me again.”

Saying that, she left the coffee shop hurriedly.

That was not the last time she met him. She had to meet him again because the next day he transferred a significant amount into her account, hoping that seeing so much money already, she might change her mind. But she didn’t. She had to meet him one last time and warn him never to cross her path again. She transferred all the money back to his account and even shut that account forever to ensure he didn’t play with it anymore.
