Maya wiped her face with the tissue and glanced at herself in the mirror. She recalled the piercing eyes of Kunal Malik and Dev Malik when they spotted her with Ranveer Malhotra. Another woman came out and washed her hands. Maya tried to act normal as the woman left the washroom, and the instant she did, Maya saw Ranveer Malhotra entering.

“What the hell are you doing here? It’s a ladies' washroom. Just leave,” she barked at him.

Ranveer approached and covered her mouth with his palm.

“Quiet. This is the only place I can talk to you without others' eyes on us.”

Maya stared blankly at him, stupefied by his audacity. He removed something from his pocket and inserted it in Maya’s ear.

“Ouch,” she screamed again. “What is that?”

“It’s a micro earpiece,” he replied, fixing it properly in her ear. “Hide it by your hair,” he commanded.

Maya had no clue what was happening, but she did as told to her.

“Kunal or Dev Malik will definitely make an attempt to talk to you privately tonight. I want to hear that.”

Maya swallowed.

“You think I will not come and tell you what we speak? You don’t trust me, do you?” she snapped.

“Ranveer Malhotra doesn’t even trust his own shadow.”

Maya sighed in frustration. There was no point in explaining to him or expecting any good thoughts from him.

“Fine. I hope this thing works. It’s starting to annoy me,” she tried to press it properly in her ear when he held her wrist.

“Don’t play with it. You might get caught.”

Maya nodded. He was right. She couldn't let people know she had that earpiece.

The washroom door opened, and another woman stepped inside. The moment she saw the two, she blushed.

“Sorry,” she muttered and left. Ranveer smirked at her actions, whereas Maya was not very happy about it. She didn’t want people to think wrong about them.

“Just leave now,” she shouted at him again.

Ranveer stepped back and walked out, giving her one quick glance. Maya finally relaxed. All this was too much to bear.

************

She returned and joined Ranveer at the party. Dev Malik cut the cake, and Dhruv popped the champagne. His other son Kunal hugged his father and fed him the cake. Maya noticed that Ranveer showed no interest in any of this. After some time, while she was still standing with him, Dev Malik approached.

“Ranveer, my close associates want to talk to you. Can you please excuse us, Maya?” he asked.

“Sure.”

Ranveer gave her a stiff stare, aware that this was just to distract them so that one of them could talk to her privately. Maya nodded weakly, gesturing that she would handle it. As soon as he walked away with Dev Malik, Kunal joined her with a glass of champagne.

“Your favorite,” he said, offering the glass to her.

Maya took it from him and shook her head in dismissal.

“Not anymore, Kunal,” she said, putting the glass away.

Ranveer was crowded with the people his father wanted him to meet, but he could hear everything from the other earpiece in his ear and occasionally kept glancing at Maya and Kunal.

“I can see that,” Kunal replied. “You have changed sides.”
