Aman left, giving her enough details about the event, and Maya returned home. She saw her mother happily talking to someone on the phone, but the moment Maya stepped into the house, Garima disconnected the call.

“Mom? Whom were you talking to?” Maya asked.

Garima panicked.

“No one,” she lied. “I was just about to dial you.”

Maya knew her mother was lying. Could it be her father? Was he now making direct contact with her? That wasn’t good. She wanted to ask her mother directly but feared it might invoke additional stress on Garima. She decided to ignore it for now.

************

The D-Day arrived, and Maya was fully set to leave with Ranveer Malhotra for the party. She told her mother and Pammi about Ranveer’s father’s birthday event, which he wanted her to attend with him. They were more than happy for her and kept talking about the positive side of this thing.

“I think he wants to introduce Maya to his father. That will be good. It shows his seriousness,” Pammi uttered.

“I cannot wait for his father to come and meet me asking for my daughter’s hand in marriage for his son,” Garima replied.

Maya rolled her eyes picking up her phone and purse; she was all set to leave.

“Mom, you are thinking too far ahead. It’s just a party. Don’t build high hopes.”

“Oh, come on. I can already see your future with him.”

Maya wanted to argue, but that’s exactly when she got a call from an unknown number. She answered.

“Hello.”

“I am down.”

Maya recognized Ranveer’s voice. She should save his number. The last time she had taken it from Aman, she couldn’t save it.

“On my way,” she said and disconnected. “He is here. I am leaving. Call me if there is anything.”

“Don’t worry about here. Just enjoy the party,” Garima hugged her.

Maya sighed deeply and finally headed down.

Chapter 14

Ranveer Malhotra got down from his posh vehicle to answer Dhruv’s call.

“Where are you, Bro? Everyone is asking for you.”

“I am on my way, Dhruv. Will reach in 30 minutes.”

“Okay, I hope that lucky woman is joining you.”

“She is.”

Maya walked out of the elevator, that same instance, taking away his breath and the ability to speak. She had worn a red gown, which had a side slit, showing her half leg. The thin straps on her shoulder held the weight of her gown entirely. As she came closer, he observed her glittering face, and he could confidently say that she was not wearing much makeup. She had a glowing skin by birth. Maya had only highlighted her cheeks with rose shade blusher, and her lips glistened with the red gloss. Overall, she looked killing tonight.

“Bro? Hello? Are you listening?”

Ranveer came out of his stance as he heard Dhruv again.

“Yes. We’ll see you soon.”

He disconnected the call as she reached him. Maya was nervous, and he could tell by reading her hand gestures. She had clutched the red wallet tight in one fist, while her other hand was busy adjusting the strap of her dress in position. She was uncomfortable, and why not. He had given her enough reasons to be so. Without making the moment more unfavorable for the two, Ranveer opened the backseat door for her. She got inside, and he followed her in. After five minutes of silence, Maya decided to break it first.
