That was kind of rude.

“And ever since then—” he rubbed his palms over his face. “She has never understood that.”

Hmm. She looked away. This was not serious but still a matter of concern. Ranveer bent forward and took Maya's hand in his.

“This is all you should know about Adira and her interest in me. There is nothing beyond I can explain.”

Her brow rose. “You do know how this is going to turn up if we get engaged, don't you?” she asked.

“I will handle her.”

“Just like you handled her so far?”

“Maya… enough of this,” he shouted back this time. “I have given you all the answers, and I want you to take them, not judge them beyond the scope of the situation.”

She leaned back on her chair, shoving his arm away from hers. The doorbell rang. Ranveer composed himself to look normal and headed out to open the door. Maya was totally confused. What was she going to do about Adira now? Should her mother know about this yet, or should she hide it just like she had hidden other things?

“Maya,” Daadi entered the dining area with Ranveer.

“Daadi, good morning.” She got up from her seat.

“Very good morning, Maya. I hope I am not interrupting you both.”

“No. We were just…” Maya looked at him. “Talking.”

“Arguing,” he intervened.

Maya bit her lip. Why did he have to say that? Daadi smiled, seeing their cold faces.

“I am glad there is someone who can argue with my grandson.”

Maya faked a smile, whereas Ranveer decided to move out.

“I've got some work downstairs. Will finish and come back.”

As soon as he left, Daadi made her way to Maya, and they sat relaxed on the couch.

“I talked to your mother last night. She is a nice woman,” Daadi muttered.

“She said the same about you,” Maya added with a happy smile.

“She is ready for your engagement. Now it is just you and Ranveer who have to take a stand on it.”

Maya shifted uncomfortably.

“We are on it, Daadi. I am still skeptical about how this is going to be.”

“Why? I thought it is Ranveer who wants to rethink. You seem to be a woman who wants commitment.”

“I do,” she nodded. “I just don’t know if I am committing to the right man.”

Daadi’s expressions fell.

“Oh.”

Maya read that and grasped her hand.

“I need some more time, Daadi. We aren’t that close yet, and I feel for any relationship to stabilize, that momentum is required. I am still trying to understand him. I know he takes good care of me and Mom, but I am also scared of his past, his temper, and his secrets. Until he fills my confusion with enough answers, I cannot walk ahead with him.”
