“Me too, mom. Me too,” she murmured and then hung up.

Why was everything in her life happening at lightning speed?

Next Morning

When Maya came out of her room, freshly showered and hoping to see Ranveer Malhotra in the living room but he wasn't there. She found breakfast neatly arranged on the table and it seemed like it had arrived hot and fresh just now. She walked to the table and found a note on the lid with 'Open me' written on it. Did Ranveer do this? She gently opened the lid and found another note below it.

'No more secrets'

Yeah. That's what she hoped for and it looked like she had managed to convince him on that part too. She looked around and found him in relaxing pants and a T-shirt, standing away from her, but his eyes sharply reading every expression on her face.

“Is this really what it looks like?” she asked him.

“I mean it from the bottom of my heart, if that's what you want to hear from me,” he said.

Maya rolled her eyes. Bottom of my heart? It seemed like he finally realized how to impress a pissed off woman. Before she could dwell on it further, he courteously pulled a chair for her. She acknowledged the gesture and took her seat.

“Aren't we having breakfast with Daadi today?” she asked as Ranveer settled in opposite her.

“She called us, but I declined. We need some 'we' time too, don’t we?” he explained. “After all, we need to break the ice of secrecy between us.”

A smile tugged at Maya's lips. He seemed genuinely determined.

“Just breaking the ice won't necessarily win approval for the engagement,” she warned.

“I know it will,” he smirked, offering her pancakes, which she accepted.

“This is really difficult for me, to speak about myself, to owe an explanation for each of my deeds. And I would do this for no one except you, Maya. I want you to know that,” he admitted.

Maya swallowed hard, nodding her head.

“Is this going to be some kind of interview?” she teased. “Like me asking my doubts and you clarifying?”

“I will leave it up to you. Do it your way; I am ready.”

He had never spoken so openly before, and Maya saw this as the perfect opportunity to delve into his past, particularly the answers that could complicate their relationship.

“Fine,” she leaned back in her chair. “Whose lipstick mark was on your shirt collar when I was in the hospital?”

Oh f*ck! Ranveer clenched his jaw, not because of anger but that wasn't the question he had expected to be first.

Chapter 36

“What happened? Froze?” she mocked. “You know what Ranveer? I don't think you are ready for this.”

Now that felt like a challenge and he was always ready for it. Maya made a mental note of his expressions. She didn't want to push him too hard to clarify her doubts but if he was expecting a real relationship, this was the least he had to start with.

“What if I say,” he cleared his throat, “knowing that name, you won't be impressed and things can go complicated further.”

This was getting interesting. She leaned on the table. “I need a name not your excuses.”

Surprised by her determination, Ranveer decided to let it out.

“Adira Bajaj.”

Her face drained of color.
