“I should be asking you that. You were the one hit,” Maya replied.

“True, but I can take care of myself. I'm worried about you. Isn't that man too rough to handle? I wonder how you're still coping with him.”

Maya sighed. “I've made my choices.”

Ranveer entered the room. He leaned by the window, watching her talk. Maya found it extremely difficult to communicate if this was how he would be watching her all the time. She was about to get away from him when he gripped her elbow.

“What?” she mouthed as he took her phone and disconnected it. “What are you doing? I was talking to someone.”

“Kunal,” he snapped. “You were talking to Kunal and that’s totally unnecessary for now.”

Maya looked perplexed at him.

“How do you know it was him?”

Ranveer didn’t care to reply. “That’s not important.”

“Heck, it is,” she snapped. “How did you know who I was talking to?”

Ranveer rubbed his temple. She always was hungry for information which he didn’t want to provide.

“Are you tapping my phone calls?” she came to the point.

Ranveer bit his lip, trying to avoid any affirmation to that.

“Damn you, Ranveer Malhotra.”

She stepped away from him, groaning at his insensitivity. How could he do this?

“Maya.” He walked behind her.

“Don't,” she snarled. “Don't give me any excuses.”

“I'm not giving excuses. I'm just saying it was necessary.”

“Why?” she turned back to face him. “Why was it necessary? So that you could know if I am hiding anything from you? If I am playing a double cross? What is it? Tell me.” She shouted. “Why are you so control freak?”

“Because that's the only way I have learned to reach where I am today,” he replied coolly.

“Fine. Maybe that's how you earned all this. But relationships don't work that way, Ranveer. You need to trust the other person and earn back the same. You cannot always impose your conditions and cage me.”

Ranveer's eyes glittered with some beautiful thoughts. “Too much advice for a fake relationship, isn't it?” he interrupted.

Maya went blank again. Yeah. Fake! Was it still fake? From her side, yes. But his? She thought he was getting serious especially when he promised his Daadi that he would think about engagement.

“Let me ask you this very straightforwardly, Ranveer. What is in your mind? What do you want from me?”

When she went quiet, feeling utterly exhausted, he gently held her arm and made her sit on the couch.

“Water,” he offered her a glass of water. She needed it. Gulping some down her dry throat, she kept the glass aside. Ranveer took the next seat and turned to face her. “Now that you have asked me this, let me share it with you then.”

Maya kept looking in his eyes.

“I want to make our relationship official.”

Maya was taken aback. He what?

“I want the entire world to know you are mine. No more fake gestures... no fake laughs... fake togetherness... fake behaviors... Let's get engaged, Maya. Your mother already likes me, I don’t care of your father’s views. I am okay if you want to continue working where you are. You and your mother get to stay with me forever. We started on the wrong foot but that doesn’t mean we will continue being enemies to each other. We have something strangely attractive between us which I have never felt for anyone else before. All of this might look like a huge step to you but trust me, I will never give you a chance to repent over your approval. You don’t need to support me in handling the Malik’s anymore. I will take care of them separately because anyways you agree or not, involving you directly with them is no longer my choice. I want you to stay out of that father-son duo. I know what they are capable of and even though I can protect you from every action they take against us, I don’t want you to get hurt emotionally, morally or physically in this process.”
