Garima pushed her away when she tried to soothe her back.

“How can you say that? You haven’t even met him yet. I know what he is. I agree he did some mistakes, but he wants me back. He wants to see me, meet me, stay with me, and he is unable to do this because of you.”

Tears swelled in Maya’s eyes.

“I don’t want him to hurt you again, Mom. That’s all. I wouldn’t tolerate you bearing another pain because of him. And if you feel I am keeping you caged all the time, it is really for your own benefit.”

Garima moved her gaze from Maya and turned to the other side.

“Mom, please.”

“Go away,” she barked.

Maya shut her eyes. It was so difficult to make her mother understand. She wanted to fall into that ditch again, which she was yet to come out of totally. She had to start her mother’s therapy soon so that she understood what was right for her and what was not. However, the looming question remained: how could she secure the 70% advance required for the therapy within the limited timeframe of one week?

************

Somehow, Maya managed to feed dinner to her mother, promising her that she would never repeat this mistake again. She lied to Garima, telling her that next time she was allowed to take gifts and flowers from him. But how long would this work? She had to put an end to this someday.

Standing in the balcony of her apartment, she looked at the spectacular view of the city. This city had given her many things - fame, name, money to survive, but it had also snatched the most respected relationship she had in her life and showered her with unnecessary hatred and complicated misunderstandings. Even after three long years, she had still not been able to come out of it. She watched the tallest building in the city, owned by Ranveer Malhotra. He owned almost half of this city in some way or the other. That just demonstrated his power, strength, and abilities. He could do anything to turn her life and career into dust again. It was so unfair that such gifts always lay in the hands of the wrong people.

Her phone rang. It was Roshni's call again. She must have known what happened today in Ranveer’s Office, and that's why she must have called. Maya hesitated initially to answer her call, but she knew it was impossible to avoid it. She had to face situations rather than running away from them.

“Hi Roshni.”

“Maya, what is wrong with you? I thought you would handle the matter after meeting Ranveer, but it seems like you complicated it again. Do you know he has escalated this matter to Blitz? Vikram Sethi, your manager, called me just now.”

“What did he say?” Maya asked.

“Ranveer has declared never to pick models from Blitz ever for his events. Do you realize what that means? Malhotra Group is the oldest and top-paid client of Blitz. If they don't give us contracts, Blitz will go in losses.”

Maya pressed her forehead. She hadn't expected the matter to take such a huge blow. She shouldn't have taken this issue lightly.

“Maya, say something. Forget about the incentives; even your job is at risk now,” Roshni exclaimed.

Maya nodded, biting her lower lip in frustration.

“I know.”

“Then do something. Stop Ranveer from withdrawing all his contracts from Blitz.”

Maya breathed hard.

“I will try, Roshni. I will try.”

She hung up, unable to lead the conversation further. Though she had assured Roshni she would try, she had no clue how. Another meeting with Ranveer was not what she wanted. But when had fate considered what she ever wanted in her life?

************

The next morning, when Maya entered Blitz, Vikram gave her a heated glare from his cabin. He was not in a good mood. His business was going to be in losses because of her. Why would he even smile at her now? He gestured for her to come inside his cabin. Vikram had always been caring and good to her. He had every trait to be a manager, but for her, he was more like a friend. An office friend she could rely on.

“Good morning, Vikram.”

“Did Roshni call you yesterday?” he asked without bothering to wish her back.

“Yes.”

“I don't know what happened in yesterday's meeting with Ranveer, but I hope you are going to rectify it.”
